CHANGES TO UK ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSPORT HOLDERS THAT NORMALLY DON’T NEED VISAS
• The UK ETA is not yet applicable for European passport holders, only for the following 48 countries from today: American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Israeli, etc. Check eligibility here.

• The only exception is EU citizens, who will need an ETA to enter the UK from April 2, 2025.
• Citizens of these countries who are already resident in the UK do not need an ETA. The scheme is for “short” visits to the UK of less than six months for tourism and business.
• Starting TODAY, Wednesday, January 8, passengers flying on a Visa Waiver passport (see link above) to the UK will have to apply for a special travel permit – and pay a £10 fee – before entering England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
• They’ll need to be holding the necessary Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before hopping onto their flight or risk being denied boarding.
• The ETA is a digital visa-waiver which applies to most countries outside Europe.
• You can already register for the ETA through the UK Government website or the UK ETA app, with a £10 fee payable via a credit or debit card at the time of your application.
• Just make sure you’re going through the official UK Government ETA website or app, because many seemingly official sites have already sprung up and charge travellers a much higher fee for processing the same ETA.
• We also strongly suggest applying for your UK ETA well in advance of your trip, rather than leaving it until the last moment.
• "Most applicants will receive a response within three working days," the UK government advises, "with many receiving a result sooner."
• Airline staff will be checking that passengers on flights to the UK have an approved ETA – and anybody who turns up at the airport without an ETA faces missed flights, expensive rebookings, and not at all the best way to begin a holiday or business trip.
• How to apply for a UK ETA:
• Once issued, the ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, and allows multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time.
• Applying for the ETA involves:
o providing contact and passport details,
o uploading a valid digital photo,
o answering a set of questions,
o paying a £10 fee with your credit or debit card.
