Incredible Day exploring the stunning landscapes of the West Coast National Park end of September.

Normally, the wildflower season winds down by then, but thanks to the abundant winter rain we have had in the Western Cape, the flowers were still in full bloom, stretching across the landscape like a vibrant carpet of colour.

The sight of orange, pink, yellow & white blossoms covering the plains, with zebras grazing peacefully in the distance, created an unforgettable and almost surreal scene.

We were also lucky to spot a beautiful Bontebok up close.

The West Coast National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers, especially during this season when the flowers transform the area into a living canvas of incredible natural beauty.

However, it isn’t just about its wildflower season. It is the perfect beach destination during summer. Areas like Kraalbaai and Preekstoel feature peaceful lagoons with crystal-clear turquoise water, making them ideal for swimming, kayaking, and lounging. It truly is a place where you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Whether you’re basking in the beauty of the wildflowers during spring or enjoying the pristine beaches in summer, the park offers something magical year-round.

The Park is also perfect for hiking enthusiasts, offering several trails for both cyclists and hikers. Additionally, houseboats are available for rent for those looking to explore the park from the water.

What an incredible experience during our stay at the stunning Dulini Moya Lodge inside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

Every moment felt like pure magic from the breathtaking landscapes to the close encounters with majestic wildlife. The sunrise & the sunsets over the savannah were breathtaking.

We had the most hilarious game drives where we were watching 13 lions (yes, 13!) feeding on a buffalo with a clueless outsider «male lion» joining the party.

As if that wasn’t enough, we were spoilt with the cutest sight of 8 wild dog pups playing while mom kept a close eye. We also encountered elephants, buffalos, crocs, hippos & even mating leopards & so much more. This is what we call real action in the wild!

Such an incredible moment to watch this beautiful leopard Mom bonding with her 2 cubs when we recently visited one of our favourite lodge in the Sabi Sand: the Dulini Moya Lodge.

Some facts about the leopard:

The harsh reality is that 40-50 percent of the cubs do not reach adulthood. The female leopard usually gives birth to 2-4 cubs.

Dangers can be just around the corner with Predators such as hyenas, Lions or even baboons & the leopard Mom has to be on her guard at all time to protect her vulnerable & precious cubs.

Leopards are probably the least social & the most beautiful of the African big cats.

Leopards are capable to carrying animals heavier than themselves & often drag their prey into the fork of a tree high enough off the ground to avoid other predators from stealing it.

These majestic cats scratch trees & use urine to mark their turf. A make leopard will defend his territory against other males but will share it with females.

The male & female leopards spend only a short time together when they are mating after which they go their separate ways. The female raises her cubs alone.

Leopard cubs are born with barely visible spots. Common leopards & “black panthers” occur in the same litter. Black panthers start out black & stay black their whole lives. They still have spots which can be fairly seen on their fur.

The mother hides her cubs & move them from one safe location to another until they are old enough to begin playing & learning to hunt. When they are two years old they live on their own. The baby leopards are born blind & are weaned at 3 months. They usually stay with their mom until they are 18-24 months old.

Did y know that cheetah cub’s Hair is more than a fashion statement?
Cheetah cubs, at first glance, appear to have extra Hair compare to adult cheetahs. This «wild» Hair is called a «Mantle» & serves two ourposes:

The first is that, with the long Hair on their back & neck, the mantle can make a cheetah cub resemble a honey badger - a nasty species feared by many animals - ensuring that Predators keep their distance.

The second is that since cheetah cubs spend the furst few months of their life hidden in dense vegetation, the long Hair also helps to camouflage the cubs from other Predators.

Of ALL of Africa’s Big Cats, cheetahs are unfortunately the most endangered. Experts estimate that only 8,000 cheetahs are left in the wild in Africa. Habitat loss through agriculture & Industrial expansion is largely to bland for the declining numbers of wild cheetahs but fortunately, effective conservation organizations across Africa are doing what they can to preserve this besutiful species for future generations.

Seeing these beautiful & why animals in their natural habitat is an incredible experience.
