Do you know why we have a public holiday today (June 16th). It was because of the youth uprising in 1976 in Soweto. They had a whole route planned from Morris Isaacson high school to the Orlando Stadium. Kids from other schools joined in along the way. They were protesting against being taught in Afrikaans, as they saw it as the language of the oppressor. Sadly along their route, they were stop by the police. The police then attack the children which led to chaos. The first person to be shot was Hastings Ndlove, but the first to die was Hector Peterson. In the photo (taken by Sam Nzima) is of a dying Hector Pieterson as he was carried away by Mbuyisa Makhubo and accompanied by his sister, Antoinette Peterson. Hector died before he got to the hospital. They say after this event, Mbuyisa had fled and was never to be seen again. Hector's Sister now owns the memorial in honor of him.

A few nights ago, we saw an owl sitting upon a street light. The night before there were 2. We have a curse of bad luck if any of the owls sit on a certain street light. Luckily this was not the street lamp, it was the next one down to the right of this lamp that is cursed, otherwise if they sit anywhere else we are fine.
It was 10:30pm when I saw the owl. It looked around then stared at me for a couple of seconds and then it decided to turn around and flew away.

I woke up early to this beautiful sunrise today in Roodepoort in Johannesburg. Johannesburg can surprise you with it beautiful skies. At one stage it looked like the sky was split in half.

We found some Terrapins by a dam, in Pilanesberg National Park, while we were looking out at a look out point. It is very similar to the turtle, even though it is its own species. Where turtles live in Salt water like the ocean and seas, the terrapins live in freshwater, like dams, and that is one of the main differences between them.

Johannesburg looking greener and prettier after a weekend of rain. This is why Johannesburg is known as the man made forest is because in between the houses and buildings is the beautiful green grassy areas which is amazing to hike through. I would love to show my home town to the world and prove that it is not as scary as people think it is.

This is the first time I have seen a leopard up close to the Safari Vehicle, especially with fresh kill. It looks like it was munching on the Impala for about half an hour before the Leopard decided to take it up a trees. This was lucky. Not only did we see this leopard with a kill, later that night we saw a second leopard crossing the road. This all happened at the Pilensberg National Park.

This is the Buffalo Thorn Tree. This tree makes a great protection for Buffalo that are chased by predators like lions, because of the big thorns, hence the name. Did you know that the seeds can be roasted and ground as a substitute for coffee. Like many trees in Southern Africa, you can make an alcoholic beverage from the fruits. There is a cultural practice amongst mainly Zulu people that use the Buffalo Thorn. It is said that a branchis used to retrieve the spirit of a deceased person from where he or she died. A family member will go to the place where death occurred carrying a branch of the buffalo thorn which the spirit is able to hold onto. This will be taken back to the deceased homestead and the spirit will be given a new resting place. During the transportation of the spirit the carrier will at no time look backwards, he will pay for two seats on a bus or a taxi and communicate with the spirit explaining exactly what is transpiring.

Have you ever been up close to a cheetah in the wild on foot before. We were at Moditlo River Lodge up in Hoedspruit, Limpopo Province, on a game drive when our game ranger drove past a few meters past the cheetah, even when we said stop to look at the sighting, but little did we know that the Ranger would stop and let us get up close. The one cheetah came from a rehab center whjld his buddy is a completely wild one. Both of them are male. They had a female but we weren't allowed to get out of the vehicle because she just had babies. This was truly special.

Everyone knows about the Spotted Hyena or commonly known as the Laughing Hyena but have you guys ever seen a brown hyena before. Come and check out the brown hyena at the Pilensberg National Park. Let's not forget about the Blackback Jackal. That day we saw the Blackback Jackal chilling by the Elephant carcass when the brown hyena showed up for breakfast. Then 10 minutes later another hyena showed up. At first they want to fight about the food but then they both relaxed and eat together. Did you know that the Brown hyena is 100% Scavenger and can't hunt for its own food and relies on carcass, unlike the Spotted Hyena which can hunt if its really hungry.
