Do you know why we have a public holiday today (June 16th). It was because of the youth uprising in 1976 in Soweto. They had a whole route planned from Morris Isaacson high school to the Orlando Stadium. Kids from other schools joined in along the way. They were protesting against being taught in Afrikaans, as they saw it as the language of the oppressor. Sadly along their route, they were stop by the police. The police then attack the children which led to chaos. The first person to be shot was Hastings Ndlove, but the first to die was Hector Peterson. In the photo (taken by Sam Nzima) is of a dying Hector Pieterson as he was carried away by Mbuyisa Makhubo and accompanied by his sister, Antoinette Peterson. Hector died before he got to the hospital. They say after this event, Mbuyisa had fled and was never to be seen again. Hector's Sister now owns the memorial in honor of him.

What a beautiful sunset we had last night. This is one of the majestic Johannesburg sunset before the nightly showers.

A few nights ago, we saw an owl sitting upon a street light. The night before there were 2. We have a curse of bad luck if any of the owls sit on a certain street light. Luckily this was not the street lamp, it was the next one down to the right of this lamp that is cursed, otherwise if they sit anywhere else we are fine.
It was 10:30pm when I saw the owl. It looked around then stared at me for a couple of seconds and then it decided to turn around and flew away.
