Day 2: Agwambo 🦏

Meet Agwambo, a resilient 11-year-old rhino who joined Loisaba earlier this year on January 27, from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

In April, Agwambo faced a challenging territorial battle with Bingwa, which he unfortunately lost. This defeat forced him to relocate from Murefu Dam in the southern section of the sanctuary to a new area further northeast, closer to Loisaba Tented Camp. Despite the setback, Agwambo made a full recovery and adapted well to his new surroundings.

Rhino territorial fights are a natural and intense part of their behavior, especially for males. These battles often determine access to vital resources like water and grazing areas, and they play a crucial role in establishing dominance and maintaining the balance of rhino populations. While these encounters can be fierce, they are essential for the health of the ecosystem.

Agwambo soon established his new territory and was frequently seen with Seiya, a female rhino also from Lewa. However, his ambitions didn’t stop there. Recently, he decided his territory needed to expand and successfully chased Ekwang, a 12-year-old rhino from Nairobi National Park, out of his domain. Agwambo is now enjoying the range of his expanded territory, which spans three dams on the conservancy.
