Ever heard of the barcode pony?

There are many different theories about the purpose of a zebras stripes, such as camouflage and heat distribution. However one thing is for certain, the joke "barcode pony" is actually quite true. If you spend enough time studying a group of zebras, you'll be able to identify each individual due to each one having slight variations in their coats. Therefore, with advanced systems you may be able to scan them like a barcode to figure out who it is!

A popular day hiking trail that winds across a pine and blue gum plantation and indigenous forest. The Bridal Veil Falls are reached by following a road for the first part of the trip. From that point on, the trail climbs steeply through the eucalyptus plantations and indigenous forest. This moderate 10.2 km circular route reaches the magnificent 65m high Bridal Veil Falls.

Various butterflies, frogs and reptiles are also evident all along the route and over 200 birds have been identified in this area including African olive-pigeon (rameron pigeon), hadeda ibis, jackal buzzard, red-chested cuckoo, Diedrick cuckoo, helmeted guinea fowl, Knysna lourie/loerie, cape rock-thrush and red-winged starling.

Hiking permit available at our Nelspruit/Mbombela office.

The Forest Falls Day Trail is a 4km circular route that starts from the Green Heritage Picnic Site. The trial leads through an indigenous forest along the Mac Mac River and patches of pine plantation to the Forest Falls. Spend some time at Forest Falls listening to the soothing melody of water and marvel at the fact that this is the only waterfall in the area that is wider than it is high. On the return journey, a cement bridge takes you to the opposite bank of the Mac Mac River, back to the starting point. Hiking permits for this trail are now available at our Nelspruit/Mbombela office.

Let's leave the road and take the trail!

The weather has been a little unpredictable in the Northern Serengeti. This has resulted in absolute chaos with the movement of the wildebeest. The recent rain has seen many large herds cross the Mara river into Lamai over the past few days. Most of these crossings are happening at number four which is located in front of our camp.

I have been in awe of these incredible creatures as they tackle the river and cannot wait to share my images with you all soon. Lots of action!

Tusks are teeth; lateral incisors, to be specific. Unlike our incisors, elephant tusks continue to grow throughout their lives. If it weren’t for regular wear and breakage their tusks would be incredibly long. Most breakage occurs as as a result of regular foraging, which causes deep grooves to form at the tips of the tusk, that break off. But larger breaks like the one pictured here, occur too. Males may break their tusks during a fight or sparring match with another male. Females too, may break their tusks in an altercation, but this is rare. Elephants also break their tusks while digging, tusking the ground, breaking branches or when they are stripping bark from trees. Once a tusk has broken it is used less than the longer tusk and after a number of years is may catch up with its pair. Exceptions occur when the tusk is so badly broken that the tooth’s nerve is exposed. If the nerve is damaged the entire tusk may eventually fall out.

S e l a t i S a t u r d a y s | Impressive Impala

Due to their frequent appearance on safaris, impalas are often overlooked, but they are fascinating creatures with some remarkable traits. Having evolved with minimal change for around five million years, impalas are highly adaptable and exhibit impressive evolutionary strategies:

1. Synchronised Breeding: At the start of the wet season, female impalas give birth within a few days of each other. This synchronisation enhances calf survival rates by ensuring ample food and water and maximising safety through group numbers.

2. Versatile Diet: Impalas are mixed feeders - This dietary flexibility provides them with a significant advantage over other antelopes that either browse or graze exclusively.

3. Unique Glands: They possess metatarsal glands on their hind legs above their hooves, a feature unique among South African antelopes. These glands release a scent that may help other impalas navigate danger by acting as a “follow me” sign

4. Rutting Behaviour: During the rutting season, males leave their groups to compete fiercely for territories rich in resources. Vocalisations and physical clashes, including horn fights, determine dominance and territory.

5. Camouflaged Colouring: Impalas have a distinctive line of shading on their torso that provides camouflage, breaking up their outline and helping them blend into their environment.

6. Athleticism: These antelopes are incredibly agile, capable of jumping up to 2 meters high and spanning 10 meters in distance.

These traits make the impala not just a resilient survivor but also a marvel of evolutionary design. So, the next time you spot a herd in the bush, take a moment to appreciate their remarkable adaptability and grace.
