And there you have it! This explains it all! I don’t drink G and T’s but love my sundowners!

Most days in the bush come to a close over sundowners, but where does this tradition come from?

The gin & tonic is the traditional beverage to consume at sundowners, which marks the transition from day to evening.

The reason for this is actually rather practical. You see, during South Africa's colonial rule, it was discovered that quinine is effective in keeping mosquitoes (and thus malaria) at bay.

Quinine is bitter stuff, and so it was mixed with sugar and lime in a mixture that later became tonic water because it quite literally was a "tonic" for malaria. Gin was supplied to British troops as part of their ration bundle and thus, the gin and tonic was born!

So, the next time somebody questions your gin-drinking habits, explain to them that you're doing it for medicinal purposes!

Busy day today! Beautiful low flight, children greeting us at the airport, road trip for site inspection and just checked into our gorgeous lodge for the night and then chimp trekking in the morning! Great couple of days so far! Enroute to our first adventure…walking safari in rhino sanctuary! First night in Entebbe was at where Maggie took amazing care of us!! Last night was in Kampala. Lovely rooms, amazing brunch, live music and dinner!
