This was a wondetful sighting. Off picture to the left was a bird hide and the lions came into the parking enclosure briefly.
A French couple sitting in the hide just sat tight ....

Once the challenge was completed we entered Lesotho at Telle in SW, and traversed the country through the mountains re-entering SA at Sani.
All on all over 25 mountain passes. Amazing through and along the tracks in the remote mountainous areas of that country.

28/01/2020

As mountains pass and 4x4 enthusiasts we loved the Ben 10 Eco Challenge..... 10 specified passes within a week. Our relaxed effort accomplished in 4 with only a bent running board.

While there some areas still had traces of recent fires that we believed was controlled.
On Monday someone asked whether safe with a fires there ... I responded that it was OK to go there ....always OK.
I didn't know about the current fire that started outside the park, crept in at the wilderness area in the NW, then spread through the park and engulfed and destroyed the Mankwe hide!
Bad news ......

Pilanesberg ....
A great encounter with a very hungry pride of 14. First 50 metres east of the hide, then in "safe" parking area of the hide, then 30metres to the west of the hide, and then under trees to the south before moving up the hill.
They were eyeing the hippos but didn't venture too close. Maybe hoping for an infant to move away from the mother?
A foreign couple were in the hide at the time aware of the pride but not that they were in the parking area for 5 minutes. When clear (sort of) we dashed in to warn them not to exit the hide without taking a good look around.
Then the lone elephant calmly drinking until a white rhino came to do same - this upset him so he chased the rhino away.
Also two jackals picking up the scent of a weak sick or injured impala and going after it into the bush - all we saw was the dust.....
Always interesting things happening in the bush.

While we can arrange trips of all comfort levels, we have just got back from a most fantastic 4x4 and camping road trip to Botswana spending time at Elephant Sands and the Old Hunters Road, Vic Falls (Zimbabwe), and Chobe before tackling the 4x4 tracks through Savuti to Khwai. 13 people, 5 4x4s and enough fuel, food and water for the time in this remote area.
Being in this remote part was fantastic what with animals walking close and through our unfenced clearing. Wonderful game viewing all the time.
Driving through the Savuti area one does not come across many vehicles ..... we did come across one where this guy was fixing the bearings of a vehicle. We stopped to check and, as Mike had broken both his rear shock-absorbers, he asked the guy if he knew a good mechanic in Maun who could repair shocks. This guy turned out to be a mechanic from Maun so they arranged a time later that week.
We sadly left Khwai and made our way to Lekhubu Island, a full day's drive. The tracks to Kubu (Lekhubu) were faint and a challenge in the dark (no moon). At a stage we lost the track and amazingly out of nowhere a man jumped out of the bushes to direct us.. nowhere did we even see a village.
Kubu is amazing. It is almost mystical ... an island with many baobabs in a very large dried out pan (the trexpedition picture of my page was taken there).
Then home and now, having been back for a few days, everyone on this adventure is still on a high and ready to set off again a.s.a.p.

Any adventurer looking for excitement, Southern Africa can provide and that goes for any level of comfort!

Just returned from an exciting and eventful trip the the Kruger.
First my Rotary club donated another two tracker dogs to the K9 unit of Kruger. What was pleasing was that one of the dogs previously donated was the Top Dog having completed over 150 successful missions in Kruger's anti-rhino poaching operations.
Then it was on to a bush camp (comfortable tents and great catering) and 5-6 hours walking in the wild each of the two days. Came across a rhino, had an altercation with a lone elephant bull, tracked a lion but lost the spoor into the long grass, and had a hyena watching us from close while having lunch - waiting to pick up our scraps.

Next week we are off on a 5 4x4 vehicle tenting safari through Botswana so watch the space!

06/06/2018

Off to the Kruger Park again next week. Comfortable bungalow accommodation for two nights .... we will be handing over two tracker dogs to the K9 unit for anti-rhino poaching use.
Then three night at a bush camp and some exciting bush walking.
The African safari high season has begun and, on our recommendations,we have booked folks into luxury bush lodges in the Greater Kruger. These lodges are for folks who prefer seeing African bush the more comfortable way.
In July I will lead a 4x4 safari with my family in 5 vehicles around Botswana. This is a trip for adventurers sleeping in tents in the wildest Africa!
Will be posting some pictures and reports soon.

Doing a Southern Africa trip to places that many South Africans have not ......
TREXPEDITION has just planned and hosted a group of Saskatonians from Canada on another experience of a lifetime.
First leg was experiencing Caprivi in Namibia, Chobe in Botswana, and the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
Second leg was an exhilarating 11-day TREXPEDITION road trip to Skukuza and Lower Sabie in the Kruger Park, south to Swaziland (the King renamed the country eSwatini while we were there), then further south to the iSimangaliso Wetlands world heritage site in KwaZulu-Natal, on to and up Sani Pass in the southern Drakensberg where, after a bumpy 4x4 trip up the pass, we lunched at the highest pub in Africa (2973m).
Pictures are from the road trip.
Then back to Johannesburg for tours of Soweto and the World of Beer. Thereafter to Nosy Be in Madagascar before returning to Cape Town en route back home.

Best touring with TREXPEDITION to all corners of Southern Africa. Soon a 4x4 tenting safari (also do lodges) through Botswana.

Some of my better and interesting shots ... these were at Ingwelala.

13/02/2018

By now most have heard or read about a poacher that was killed by lions at Ingwelala in the Umbabat region adjoining the Kruger National Park. A high caliber rifle and a bag containing a poacher's equipment was found close to the remains of the poacher.
Poaching is a major problem and concern and while many poachers are caught and sentenced or, as happened now, killed, the poaching continues. Many animals are facing extinction and much is being done to safeguard their existence. This does need resources and resources cost money. If you are willing to assist and need more information or direction, please contact me at [email protected] or +27 82 555 1122. Alternatively contact:
The Rotary Club of Sandton - [email protected]
On the lighter side, one report stated that a similar incident occurred in "nearby Namibia". Well, Namibia is on the opposite side of the continent and over 1600 kms (1000 miles) from Ingwelala!
Nearby?!!

12/02/2018

This is Masthulele that died 2017. At the time of his death he had the longest tusks is the whole of the Kruger Park.
We had two encounters with him, one right in front of us in the riverbed! Poor guy was already old and had to lift his head to get his tusks off the ground.
No doubt his tusks will be on display in the Elephant Museum together with those of the large tuskers that preceded him.
If you haven't been to that museum, add it to your bucket list.

02/02/2018

If a safari is on your bucket list, we are not only booking agents for Southern Africa i.e. South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Swaziland, but also do guided-driven trips for groups of up to six persons.
The favourite destination for the guided-driven trip is the Kruger National Park and, due to its popularity both local and internationally, availability of accommodation is often hard to get.
From Nov18 2018 we have a riverside house available for 6 persons in three AC bedrooms en-suite for a week. This can be split into a 3 and a 4 day stay.
This offer is open until Apr30 2018.
For an experience of a lifetime and for more information, send a mail to [email protected] to start planning. Alternatively call, SMS or WhatsApp Graham on +27 82 555 1122.

This is not our usual travel/safari report ..... please read this and share it far and wide.

The Kruger National Park (KNP) is one of the treasures of Africa and, while there are many wonderful reserves on the continent, for me the KNP just has that something magical.
From virtual extinction in the 60s, the herds of rhinoceros have been re-established to a satisfactory survival level.
The bad news now is that these rhino are being poached and one of my most traumatic and depressing sightings for me was coming across a recently poached rhino carcass with its horn brutally hacked off with an axe or panga.
Millions have been spent on anti-rhino poaching .... helicopters, tracking equipment, not to mention the manpower to fight this war.
Everything possible to stop poachers before they kill the rhinos.
To assist the efforts, a K9 dog unit was established. These tracker/sniffer dogs are attaining much success in arresting poachers.

I am a member of the Rotary Club of Sandton in South Africa and we too have got involved .... together with the Rotary Club of Ottumwa in Iowa USA we donated two dogs, Badger and Baillie, both of whom have over 20 arrests and taking into account the success of all dogs in service, this number is large. But still poaching is on the increase.

The need now is for another three dogs and so far we have raised enough for one and 25% of a second. We need your help to raise another approximately US$15000.
If you are a lover of wildlife and the survival of species on earth, and sympathetic to our mission, your monetary assistance will be appreciated.
All donations should be transferred/wired to:
Bank Nedbank Ltd
Branch Code 198 765 (universal)
Account name: Rotary Club of Sandton
Account Number: 1121 673 937
Swift NEDSZAJJ
Reference Dogs + "Your Name"

Alternatively, if it is easier for you and are happy to do so, transfer the funds to my PayPal account [email protected] for passing over.

Then mail your confirmation thereof and all your details to either
[email protected] or [email protected]

These pictures are of the white rhino, the black rhino, donors from Iowa with Baillie and her armed handler on assignment (that's me on right!), and a magazine cutting of when we first presented Badger and Baillie.

Trust that one day when Trexpedition arranges your safari and/or vacation in Southern Africa, we will be able to show you even larger numbers of rhino flourishing in Africa.

Thanks
Graham

From our rest camp house, we saw these lions crossing the bridge and were too slow in driving there.
However Sammy and Nadav ((Latest Sightings) were there to see the crossing - lucky guys!

This is a once in a lifetime sighting!
To have 20+ lions just stroll around you in the road is an experience every person in the world should have!
Who's seen something like this before?

This was taken yesterday outside Lower Sabie

Always something to see when game viewing in Kruger NP.
Always a good possibility of spotting the Big 5 ....
Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo
Spotting the Birding Big 6 is much harder ....
Martial Eagle, Lappid-Faced Vulture, Pel's Fishing Owl,
Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbill and Saddle-Billed Stork.
On both trips in November we found the Big 5 and a wonderful 4/6 last week.
