Have you ever heard this sound? It is synonymous with the African summer; when you're walking through the bush, fighting off Mopani flies looking for moisture in your nose and ears, sweating under the scorching African sun, that is when this sound comes alive all around you. It is called "chorusing" (and can reach up to 100 decibels) - when male cicadas vibrate their tymbals, a noise-producing organ on the side of their abdomen, in the hopes of attracting females to mate with.
