APPEAL ALERT! Help the Tourism Industry!
Hello everyone, I have an appeal to everyone reading this - far and wide... Please do your part to support the Tourism industry where you can and if you can!
This is probably the industry which will take the longest time to open up and longest time to recover, and it's being just so hardly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hotels and restaurants will recover sooner, it's the service providers - your local travel agents, tour operators and travel management companies, who are and will continue to be so very hardly hit!
My appeal is this: when booking your travel or event, even if you usually booked online, or usually booked directly with a hotel, please rather now consider using a travel agent or tour operator or travel & events management company to make your bookings for you moving forward.
All agencies are protected by their suppliers in terms of rates, so you will not be getting a more expensive price than what you find online, and if you do, know that it's because there might have been some miscommunication between the hotel and the agency, and rather than just go ahead and book online, just let your travel agent or travel management company know about this, and they will resolve the price discrepancy for you, so that you can still book through them.
This is something that everyone booking travel now or in the future can do and a way to do your part in supporting local, and supporting people who have been thrown into this terrible situation and are part of an industry that will take a very very long time to recover.
Your efforts and help can make a large difference to someone's life and livelihood.
If you work for a corporate, use an agent to book your travel and conferencing and events, don't book direct with the hotels and venues please.
If you are booking personal or business travel, please do the same.
You can make a large difference, if everyone started practicing this around the world, a large difference would be made to the lives of many.
NB - The hotels and suppliers will get the business anyway, so please support the intermediaries and service providing agents, as they are the ones who most need the support!
Please share and help make a difference in someone's life! The Tourism industry needs everyone's help right now...
If you are interested, please see below some recent stats released with regards to inbound travel in South Africa alone:
Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), says more than R68bn in tourism spend has been lost since South Africa’s national lockdown began at the end of March.
According to Stats SA’s Tourism Satellite Account, in 2018, total tourism spend in South Africa was R273.2bn. This translates roughly to R22.7bn per month and R748m per day in tourism expenditure that has been lost. Tourism in South Africa supports 1.5m jobs and contributes 8.6% to the GDP.
Over 250,000 employees within the tourism value chain applied for the unemployment fund program in April and May and this is expected to double when the June application opens. Roughly 49,000 SMMEs are already negatively affected and many will close shop. These SMMEs provide unique and authentic experiences sought after by travellers.
