Time to explore Sutherland!

We are in the middle of winter, so the conditions will be cold and if we are lucky, perhaps a bit of snow. Due to the cold weather, we will be staying in accommodation, but we can allow rooftop tents/caravans to park outside the building if you prefer your own setup.

Friday we will drive up to Sutherland, Saturday we will spend the day driving and exploring the surroundings of Sutherland, ending the day with an astrology evening. Sunday morning we have the option of visiting and getting a tour of SALT before embarking on the jaunt home.

If this mid-winter exploration event sounds intriguing, RSVP before the spots fill up!

Good Day

I've got a few more spaces available on my upcoming tour this Saturday. An easy and scenic day drive and lunch in Botrivier. Remember Sunday is Mother's Day, so you can use this as an excuse to enjoy some gravel roads while celebrating Mother's Day 😉

Let’s explore more railway history in South Africa!

We decided to host a scenic day drive and lunch on Saturday the 11th of May. Join us as we take a scenic drive out to Botrivier and have a lunch stop at the historic Shunting Shed. Along the route, we will be passing through Franschhoek, Theewaterskloof Dam, Van der Stel Pass, Botriver, Highlands Pass and finally Peregrine Farm Stall.

Along the route, we will be passing through Franschhoek, Theewaterskloof Dam, Van der Stel Pass, Botriver, Highlands Pass and finally Peregrine Farm Stall.

Our lunch stop will be at the Shunting Shed in Botrivier. It was built in 1876 (interesting fact, our Tunnel Tours in De Doorns also dates back to 1876) and the shed was constructed as part of the Cape Government Railways expansion project, which aimed to connect Cape Town to the interior of South Africa. Lunch will be provided by us, but drinks will be at your own cost. After lunch, we will continue the drive on scenic gravel roads until we reach the end destination of Peregrine Farm Stall near Grabouw.

JauntSA (Dieter Pey) will be hosting a scenic day drive out in the Swartland District, but as expected, there will be lots of gravel driving involved. Some of you have done this route with me before at the start of the year, but this will be the second rotation for those who could not make the first one. We will start in Malmesbury and make our way to Koringberg via gravel backroads. After a quick pitstop at Desert Rose Padstal, we will start ascending the Koringberg Pass. This is a Jeep Track that leads us over 2-private farms up to a spectacular viewpoint which overlooks the entire Swartland area. We will spend lunch up there. Please note, that no open fires are allowed at the viewpoint, only gas cookers.

The descent will be the tricky part, it is steep with about 8 tight switchbacks. The longer vehicles will need to take it slow and even do a 3-point turn. We will slowly descend and get everyone down safely. Once done with the route, we will head through Morreesburg and drive more gravel roads until we reach our end destination of Darling.

4x4, 4x2 and AWD vehicles are welcome, as long as they have moderate ground clearance. No advanced 4x4 skills are required, but the descent is steep, so we need to be cautious. The ground clearance requirement is merely for comfort and there are a few bumps and humps to get over.

Event Details:
Event Date: 24th February 2024
Starting Location: Malmesbury @ 08h00
Ending Location: Darling @ 15h00
Total Route Length: 120km (50% Gravel)
4x4 Route: Jeep track with a steep descent.
Costs: R400pp for Adults
Teenagers: R200pp for teens between 12yrs and 18yrs.
Kids: Kids under 12 are free of charge.
This is a family event, so bring the whole family along for an adventurous day.
Food and drinks: Bring your own lunch for when we stop at the Lapa on the hill. Other refreshments and food will be available at the various stops at your own cost, but you can also bring your own.
Important: No open fires are allowed at the viewpoint, gas cookers only.
Additional: Entry fee covers camping/route fees, a photographer to capture the event, a tour guide, exclusive discounts, rental radios and a good time!
Vehicle Requirements: 4x4, 4x2 and AWD vehicles are welcome. Good ground clearance is required.
4x4 Skills: Basic 4x4 skills are required, but we will assist where we can and ask us if you need assistance.
This event is limited to 10 vehicles, so RSVP to book your spot. First come first serve!
