In 2 weeks time the Foot of Africa Marathon will be taking place. I ‘grew up’ with the ‘Voet’ and remember well when it first took place. It was a BIG event and everybody ran…including myself! This marathon is known to be challenging and scenic and distances of 42, 21, 10 & 5kms can be done.
Cosy Valknes in Arniston will launch you into a good start on the day and will support you and your running buddies in resting those tired legs afterwards!
Sleeps up to 6 people.

Nothing quite beats the satisfying sensation of basking in the winter sun…
The ‘off-season’ in Arniston has numerous ‘ups’…for one, it is quiet…if you need time out, it is ideal. If you strike it lucky with balmy days, lazying about staring, reading or dreaming up new plans or ventures is first prize. If you are blessed with grey, rainy or misty days there are always books and beds, fleece blankets, hot water bottles and delicious food from local eateries. And walks and swims…come rain or shine…always a win in Arniston!

Every house must have a handyman.
And if your house is near the sea AND dates from the time of candles and oil lamps, having a man who has handy hands is an absolute necessity! Fredy is born and bred in Arniston and there is nothing he cannot fix or figure out when it comes to anything in the line of maintenance! He has a keen eye and works immaculately. His calm approach has been my lifesaver many times! Big thank you, Fredy!

The magnificent Arniston cave! No visit to Waenhuiskrans/Arniston is complete without checking out this iconic landmark. The story goes that the cave is big enough for an ox wagon with a full span of oxen to turn in…therefore the name Waenhuiskrans…literally wagon house cliff!
Spend some time in silence in this unusual space. A most inspiring meditation hall! Allow yourself to be absorbed in the spectacular sound and vibration of the ocean.
In these pics some Valknes guests are having fun! It can be tricky to find the entrance to the cave, be sure you know the way, or grab me to take you...it is an easy walk to get there and definitely only accessible during low tide.

The latest addition…Valknes and myself could not be more chuffed!
The specs were quite a thing😅…it had to be neat, functional, easy on the eye, let through light, let through air, enhance the overall look and have a lekker feel…together with Thys and Cecile Matthee and their friendly and competent workmen, the end-result ticked all the boxes🤗 thank you Cape Agulhas Glass & Aluminium for literally going the extra mile to get this job done on time🙏🏼

Nobody can make a bed like this formidable woman! She gets the pillows and duvet inners right into the corners of the covers….she has perfected her unique technique using washing pegs!! And she can do weird stuff like ironing and folding fitted sheets….I mean, who can do that!? Sarah had been part of our family for many years and is ’Head of the Valknes Cleaning Department’. Deep gratitude for Sarah’s willingness to always go the extra mile🙏🏼
