The language of hotels can sometimes sound like the code used by secret agents in a spy novel, with its many abbreviations and shortened terms, all hiding some sacred truth defining how you will be spending your long-awaited holidays. To help you have a successful holiday,” let’s take apart the way hotels talk about how and what you eat during your stay.

🔹 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 (𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻)

🔸RO means “Room Only.” It’s a bit deflating in that you only pay for your room on booking, and no food is included in the price. This meal basis is common in hotels, hostels, and villas. It is ideal for people who don’t want to be tied down to the hotel’s restaurant opening times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
~You can plan your day however you like without the risk of missing out on a meal that you have already paid for. You can either prepare your own food where you are staying or eat out in the local restaurants and cafes.

🔸BB means Bead and Breakfast, which is the most common meal basis encountered in hotels. Breakfast is included in the room rate. There are two main types of breakfast: buffet and continental.
· Continental breakfast normally includes pastries, rolls, cold cuts, cheese, sweets, and fruit. You can eat as much as you like without limits.
· Buffet breakfast normally consists of eggs, bacon and sausage, vegetables, toast, croissants, and coffee. A wide choice of hot and cold dishes. You can eat as much as you like without limits.
~BB is best for those who aren’t morning people and don’t want to worry about preparing breakfast for themselves or having to choose somewhere to have breakfast served. You simply go to the dining room, and everything is done for you.

🔸HB - Half Board is when both breakfast and lunch or evening meal are included in your room rate- Hotel dependant. Breakfast will normally include drinks (tea, coffee, juice, water), but this may not be the case for the evening meal. Drinks in the evening may cost several times more than what you could buy them for in the shops.
~On the other hand, this meal plan is great for families with children or those on a special diet. You don’t have to worry about feeding yourself at the beginning and end of the day, but everything is according to strict restaurant opening times. You can have your lunch while you’re out sightseeing during the day.

🔸FB is short for Full Board and means that all three meals are included – breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This plan would suit those on a health trip and those who don’t want to move around much. As with half board, drinks are only usually included at breakfast, and you have to pay extra at lunch and dinner.

🔸HB+ & FB+
~Some hotels offer enhanced versions of half and full board where they include some drinks at lunchtime and in the evenings. The drinks on offer and how much you are allowed to consume for the price you paid for the room will depend from hotel to hotel.

🔸AI - All-inclusive will be familiar to those of you who often holiday in places like Mauritius. It means that all meals are included as are all drinks, including locally produced alcoholic drinks. This is the kind of thing you will find in most of the resort hotels which resemble each other so closely wherever you go.
~They all have a similar set up: pools, beach, restaurants, bars and cafes all on site along with a fitness club, shops and much more – in short, they provide everything you could want for your holiday on the your doorstep so that you never need to leave the hotel premises.
~This kind of thing is ideal for those who simply want to laze about or for families with children, so that the younger travellers have something to keep them busy from dawn till dusk.

🔸UAI - Enhanced all-inclusive is really just All Inclusive with a wider range of drinks, not just locally imported ones, both alcoholic and soft drinks.

~ “Many younger generations do not purchase travel insurance and many question its legitimacy. Others see the price as an additional cost to an already overpriced travel market.” South Africans are the travellers who have most to gain by purchasing travel cover at the right level.

Jason Veitch, Head of Travel Insurance at TIC, says that travel insurance has, and will most likely remain, a contentious purchase for many people because it is not a product that comes with an immediate exchange. Veitch says the South African market is very different to other markets when it comes to buying travel insurance.

“The cost of travelling for the average South African is more expensive, mainly due to accessibility. South Africans are subject to more visa restrictions than other territories and part of these requirements are that the traveller has adequate travel insurance.
Unlike Europeans, who have free or accessible healthcare, South Africans can expect the cost of incurring medical treatment overseas to be anywhere from 10 to 20 times what they would pay in their home country. This is simply unaffordable for the traveller or family back home to cover.
Of course, the younger generation would like to spend their money on experiences more than insurance. It’s understandable. But you can experience your travel insurance product if you end up in a hospital bed, in a country that doesn’t speak your language when your insurer sends a family member to be by your side and then takes care of your flight home.”

Lara Saunders, General Manager at Giltedge Travel, says travellers tend to focus on the cost of the trip/holiday and overlook the importance of insurance, and it becomes a grudge buy.

Says Saunders: “Travellers underestimate the likelihood of something going wrong and we are finding that tech-savvy millennials are so comfortable and so accustomed to using online travel platforms to book their travel that they neglect or are not aware of the importance of having travel insurance.”

“We encourage clients to top up their insurance when paying by credit card as that cover is generally limited. Again, effective communication is key in helping clients make informed decisions about their insurance needs. The same applies to travellers who only travel with their medical aid insurance, as this is limited to medical emergencies only and is not fully comprehensive insurance bundle.

“We insist that clients sign an insurance waiver which should be common practice in the travel industry. It’s essential to ensure that the waiver clearly outlines the risks associated with not having travel insurance and that clients fully understand the implications of their decision,” says Saunders.

Veitch believes the case for travel insurance is hard to argue.

“There is no question about the legitimacy of travel insurance in the South African market. TIC has excellent claim payment records and the more credible insurers embrace treating the customer fairly in the regulatory framework set out by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).

“Travellers who do not purchase travel insurance are at a significant disadvantage. The value of insurance is only realised when the person suffers a loss that they would never be able to afford without the benefit of their policy.”
