Sections of the bark of the trunk of this knobthorn tree have been stripped by an elephant. The bark is eaten most during the dry season when there is less palatable food available. This strips the cambium layer of a tree which is full of nutrients, as long as there is still some cambium the length of the tree, from the base to the top, the tree should survive, if not this is called "ring barking" and the tree will die.
Can you tell us what might have happened to this tree? And do you know what tree it is? Seen in Greater Kruger.
