Balancing the scales to protect pangolin.

Despite their impenetrable coat of scaly armour, pangolins have become the world’s most trafficked mammal, relentlessly poached for the scales based on perceived medicinal value. Made of keratin - just like our fingernails - there is no scientific evidence of any health benefits.

In South Africa, a collaborative commitment by and to conserve the endangered Temminck’s ground pangolin is powering their journey from rescue, to rehab, to release.

This World Pangolin Day, we are paying tribute to what conservation milestones are possible through collaboration, and celebrating the work of the African Pangolin Working Group in securing a future for Africa’s pangolins.

Over-landing through Africa in 2006. I was 27 - young, impressionable, naive, innocent (kinda 😉).

As a city girl, I was thrown into something truly out of my depth. But what I experienced on this pilgrimage, I will always treasure.

On this journey I discovered my deep, raw, true love for our continent. It’s people. It’s diverse cultures. It’s animals. It’s nature. It’s sunsets… I realised how little you actually need to attain happiness.

We broke down numerous times, had to ration food and water, didn’t shower for days, got stuck in crocodile-infested swamps, chased by big tuskers and hunted by the famous Savuti Black Manes. One of us fortunate souls having to sleep on the ground got their toes nibbles by hyena.

This remarkable adventure changed the way I see the world and taught me the life lessons that make me who I am today.

Today, I am lucky enough, through my EPIC work with to be able to see these incredible places again (a little more luxurious these days I have to say 😉).

But to those young adults who are not so sure of themselves like I was, I say to you: Do it. Take the risk. Plan it. Go! You will never regret it or look back and say ‘I wish I never tried.’

You will, no doubt, return a more enriched and inspired human being. A world changer and a better person to yourself and others.

The mighty Olifants River has officially broken its banks. Taken yesterday from the air, one sees how incredible the force of nature can be.

We are grateful for the rain, but pray for those who have been widely affected this past week.

This past week, the Kruger region in South Africa has experienced record rainfall. And although it has created a slight amount of chaos, leaving guests unable to get in and out of their safari destinations, let us pause and reflect on the blessings this rain brings to this area, it’s people and it’s wildlife.

The bush has never been so green and lush. A welcome respite from the drought that was expected this year over Winter.

Let’s be thankful.
