Overland Journal Podcast Episode 190There are a handful of true living legends in the overland world: Tom Sheppard, Lois Pryce, Ted Simon, Mac MacKenny, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes, among them. But for my money, Kingsley Holgate is in a category of one. His laundry list

Sometimes sleeping in a tent isn’t so bad 😂🏕️

When traveling to Africa always look at what type of accommodation you are booking. Different countries have different styles, restrictions and rules on building in the bush. You could find yourself with a big difference when comparing certain properties. One is not necessarily better than the other - but it’s important you know what your accommodation type will be.

Let’s travel.

A friend was asking me what mods he should do first on his new 4x4 so he could travel Southern Africa. I thought I would share my answer here too.
The list is endless and the passion for sticking things on your vehicle can be addictive as well as it sometimes looks cool but you don’t have to have all that stuff. KISS
My vehicle has pretty much no mods except tyres, auxiliary battery system, roof rack and a basic drawer system and yet it’s been called all sorts of things like Sandton 4x4, a mall crawler or pavement hopper 😂. I certainly can’t sit around the campfire beating my chest in the company of owners with what are considered “tougher” 4x4’s. And yet we have done some amazing adventures in it without any problems.

You don’t need all the stuff to start out. Modern vehicles are very capable as they are. The more stuff you add the more mods you need to do to things like suspension.
Make sure you can sleep, and sit comfortably and you can eat and drink well. For example, before I could afford fridges and aux battery systems we used cooler boxes and dry ice and traveled as a family of four in a single vehicle with no trailer and now you see solo travellers with loaded roof racks, in large 4x4’s and trailers which is cool, but don’t think that you have to have all that stuff to get started.

For my next adventure, I will be parking Sabhuku’s keys and using something much more simple with very limited space to illustrate the above, so watch out for that early next year.
