Some time ago FlySafair introduced a branded beer on their flights. It is an awesome Craft Lager made by Devils Peak Brewing Company from Cape Town. A branded beer should be a requirement for any airline to even be considered for an AOC in my humble opinion.

What should have been a Cessna 402 flight from Plettenberg Bay to Wonderboom turned into a less exciting 737-800 flight with FlySafair from George to Jo'burg. Anyway finally got the Springbok winglet from the inside. ZS-SJS was the chariot.

This morning brought me a nice vintage A320 from 1989 and a new Airline in shape of Global Aviation. ZS-GAO is the 67th A320 built, and took me from Jo'burg to Port Elizabeth on a Mango flight. Still looking pretty neat inside.

Been looking for this uniquely South African photo of an British Airways coloured Boeing 737-800 winglet for quite a while. Have had other attempts but either ended up on one with white winglets or one of the Boeing 737-400s Comair also still uses. Couple weeks ago I finally succeeded though. Wing of ZS-ZWU as seen from row 26 ✈️

During Easter I was lucky enough to enjoy my first flight on the Airbus H130 (formerly known as the Eurocopter EC.130B4). Cape Town Helicopters at the V&A Waterfront now exclusively use Airbus H120s and H130s for their extremely enjoyable scenic flights around Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. Highly recommended 🚁⛰️🐳😍

Some pics from a little outing to Cape Town to catch a flight on a stunning Embraer Phenom 300 private jet. My first flight on any of the Embraer business jets. While the inside is not that different to most of its light jet competitors, the Phenom at just an awesome looking aircraft.

Booked my seat on this emptyleg with I'm Jetting, making it fairly affordable for us enthusiasts to get on some proper jet flights. There is of course a downside to flying empty legs, risk of cancellations or re-scheduling is quite a bit higher than on airliners, but a price I am more than happy to pay.

Not every day we see a Costa Rica registered aircraft in South Africa. Although yesterday TI-BGQ Let L410 UVP-E20 visited Lanseria (FALA) near Jo'burg on return from its duty with Nature Air. Sadly it had lost its colours before getting here. Aircraft is former ZS-ATD and was presumably heading for Bethlehem (FABM), the base of Air-Tec's L410 maintenance facility.

SIGHTINGS UPDATE

• A lot of lions!

31 January
Afternoon Drive
- Our afternoon started off with a massive down pour of rain. 42mm in total for Nkorho which is great!
- We headed out thinking it might be a quiet afternoon but very quickly we saw Hosana the young male leopard moving alongside an airstrip nearby. He then lay on a termite mound and had a rest.
- Saw a lot of elephants around all over the place.
- Headed to the west where we saw the whole Styx pride of lions who were busy playing around at the top of a nearby airstrip.
- A little bit further away from the Styx pride was one of the Birmingham male lions (Nsuku) who was laying in the middle of the road. We were lucky enough to see him roar before heading back to the lodge!

1 February
Morning Drive
- Our morning began with us following up on some lion tracks moving up and down just west of the lodge. We drove a bit further and found one of the Birmingham male lions (Nehna) mating with a lioness with amber eyes. This could either be the amber eyes Nkuhuma female or the young Tsalala female who the same male mated with a few weeks ago.
- We then moved further along and saw another one of the Birmingham male lions (Nsuku)
Moving along the main road and heading back south until he lay under a small bush to rest.
- We headed west to follow up on some of the wild dogs but unfortunately with no luck as they kept changing direction.
- Lots of other general game and a few elephants.

A few pics from an awesome jumpseat flight with FlyCemair on one of their Canadair CRJ100s from Hoedspruit to Johannesburg this Wednesday. First new type of the year and in total my 100th airliner type flown on so far.

To get to that side of the country I flew Airlink from Jo'burg to Kruger Mpumalanga the day before. Should have been an Embraer 140 but was changed to an Avro RJ85. Not ideal but always nice with 4 engines for short haul :)

Couple weeks ago I went to Plettenberg Bay on a King Air 200, see pics and photos in earlier post. Obviously also had to get back home again. This gave me a chance of another lovely Beech 1900D flight, this time with Flycemair to Cape Town. The last bit back to Lanseria was with Mango in a stock standard one class LCC Boeing 737-800.

From a nice 2h40m King Air flight last Wednesday going from Lanseria to Plettenbeg Bay. Was an empty leg by Plettairsafaris sold at a very reasonable price. Worth to keep an eye on their page. Stunning approach into Plett as always.

Back home having African dust under my feet again, or actually mud on this rainy day. Time to share some pics from the last batch of flights from my Europe trip. Added another 3 types to my list of aircraft flown on, The Dornier 328JET of Sun-Air, the Boeing 787-9 of Air France and last but certainly not least the Boeing 747-8i of Lufthansa (this making it a total of 8 new types for the trip)

Awesome day trip with the Danish Dakota Friends on Former Royal Danish Air Force C-47A Dakota K-682, now on civil register as OY-BPB.
Started out at Roskilde Airport near Copenhagen in less than ideal weather conditions. After an hours wait it had improved enough for us to get going for the 50 minute flight down to Flensburg just south of the Danish-German border.
After arrival we crossed back into Denmark for a visit to The Frøslev Camp Museum – a WW2 prisoner of war camp built by Denmark for the Germans to avoid Danes to being sent to the notorious KZ-camps further south.
Later in the day we returned to Flensburg for the flight back to Roskilde. Again the weather wasn't ideal but luckily good enough for us to get back.
All in all a great day out and my first flight on the Danish Dakota.

Catching up from the last post with another couple new types for me in Europe. From Stockholm I made my way to Athens via Riga, Thessaloniki and Kalamata catching among others the Bombardier C-series CS300 with Air Baltic and the pretty rare ATR 42-600 of Olympic.

So made it to Europe for a change of scenery. Yesterday I was hunting some new airliner types to fly on. Managed the Bombardier C-series CS100 with Swiss, Sukhoi SuperJet with Brussels Airlines/CityJet and less exciting the Embrear 195 on Austrian Airlines. Also managed to get some good sleep in an old Pan Am Boeing 747-200 now in use as hostel.

9S-CTM Beech F90 King Air - not the most common prefix! Apparently the Democratic Republic of Congo is in the process of replacing their 9Q- register with this new 9S- prefix. First non-airliner known to be on the new register AFAIK.

A trip to the The Rand Airshow 2017 yesterday gave the usual chance for cheap 3-4 minute helicopter flips. Sadly only various JetRanger types were used, but still couldn't help doing two flips with HENLEY AIR. First up was a front seat flight on ZS-HDX Bell 206L-1 LongRanger II followed by a flip on 1974-vintage ZS-HVY Bell 206B-2 JetRanger II.

Good old former Springbok Classic Air DC-3 ZS-NTE have been sold in Europe and is now painted into 'a yet to be seen' Aer Lingus retro scheme. First public appearance in its new colours will be at the Bray Air Display and Foynes Air Show, Ireland, this coming weekend, where former owner Flippie Vermeulen will take it to the skies :)

These pics are from an awesome scenicflight back in December 2012 also with Capt. Flippie at the wheel. Don't forget Springbok Classic Air still does regular scenicflights above Jo'burg, but now on another classic, their Beech 18.

I don't think there are anywhere in the world were airlines do as much promotion with real aircraft as in South Africa. Pretty much every airshow have an airliner display of sorts, everything from solo displays, airliners in formation to airliners with aerobatic teams.

Lastest of these displays was FlySafairs flyover at Ellis Park for Springboks test against France this past weekend. Here a little short video about the flight well worth watching.

Brings memories back from the legendary 747 flyover before the 1995 Rugby World Cup final.
