Sea turtle visiting our beautiful coastline!

TURBO 🐢
Turbo is a sub-adult green turtle that we released in December 2022. Over 101 days, he has travelled 2 265km! That's an average of 22.4km per day.

Shortly after his release, Turbo headed inshore and spent some time in the West Coast National Park. Then, Turbo headed significantly further offshore (340km!) before coming inland at Hondeklipbaai. Turbo has spent the last three weeks slowly moving south, hugging the coastline.
Lately, he's been in the shallower waters of Dwarskersbos, where the water is up to 5º warmer (currently, it's about 19º). This spot is also protected from the Southeasterly wind, making it a good hang-out spot!

The name Velddrif came into existence when a farmer, Theunis Smit, took his stock through a drift in the veld, to find grazing across the river. The animals often had to swim across the river. Later on, in 1899, a pont was built, which was the only means of crossing the Berg River.

The estuary has enormous economic significance as it accommodates a fishing harbor and a bokkom industry on its bank. Salt pans can be seen from the road, often with flocks of flamingos in them. It is possible to tour the salt works on Thursdays.

DAY 11-12: 6-7 April 2019 - This weekend it was just the two of us, no kids, lots of work! Here are the results: 1. Kids’ bedroom bunk bed ladder and safety rail installed. 2. Bathroom tiling completed and grout filled in. 3. Silicone and finishes and a whole lot of paint touch ups done. And 4. CLEAN, CLEAN and CLEAN. Exited to bring our friends here this coming easter weekend!

DAY 8-10: 21-23 March 2029 - It was not an easy task, trying to get some work done whilst trying to entertain 3 toddlers - 2x2 + 1x3 = 7 out of 10 on a scale of difficulty!!! But in between crying children and taking them to the beach we did manage to do the following: Outside seating- this is where we can enjoy a glass of wine and take in the view! We put up a gate- safety for small children, we tiled the shower and bathroom floor, and the scullery floor; we connected the stove and oven, added a spice rack and lastly put up the beam and bunk bed in the kids’ room.
