Are you a hard-core birder with a lifer that you want to tick off your list or perhaps you're just keen to get out and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful sunshine over a gorgeous picnic basket made from the finest home grown, grass-fed, free-range local farm produce?

Either way, this auction listing might be of serious interest to you!

Introducing the second oldest town in Mpumalanga, the quaint and historic Wakkerstroom!

A place where life still revolves around the large church square, where sheep, goats and horses are found grazing next to the houses, and donkey carts can still be seen on occasion in the streets.
A chance to be transported to a bygone era of wholesome outdoor living.

This destination is personally right at the top of my list of ideal getaways as this sort of outdoorsy type retreat is what I live for.

I could rattle on all day about the variety of activities available in and around Wakkerstroom that you can experience during a trip here.
But I'll save you the extremely lengthy post and instead highlight just one incredibly special aspect of Wakkerstroom.

And that is its international recognition as a superior birding destination. It holds national biodiversity importance and boasts wetlands, grassland, and forests!

More excitingly for our birders, this means that if you would like a chance to see some very special birds such as Rudd’s Lark, Botha’s Lark, Yellow Breasted Pipit, Blue Korhaan, Blue Crane, African Marsh Harrier, Red-chested Flufftail, Corn Crake and Southern Bald Ibis to name just a few then this is the perfect place to do just that!

Currently available on auction we have a 2-night stay for two at the beautiful DeKotzenhof Guest House! Go to www.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction/ to place your bid.

Dont forget to bring your binoculars when visiting The Blue Marlin Hotel!

Aside from schools of dolphins and porpoises, Humpback whales are commonly seen on their way to Mozambique. They are far more boisterous than the relatively docile Southern-right whales and you’ll be rewarded with acrobatic displays of prowess.

The Blue Marlin Hotel, just 40 minutes south of Durban, is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast’s most iconic hotels boasting exquisite sea views.

Currently on auction we have a 7-night stay at this incredible hotel for 2 lucky people. Head on over to https://www.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction/ to check it out.

Anyone in the mood for a romantic weekend staycation?

The Inanda Club boasts 10 executive lodge rooms with full en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi access, personal safe, DSTV and bar fridge. You will enjoy full use of all club facilities including the gym, restaurants and bar during your stay.

This beautiful establishment screams sophisticated elegance and is the perfect location to go wine and dine your other half.

Did you know that the stunning Inanda Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of providing a home for equestrian sports? The club was located in, what was then, the countryside north of Rosebank and it is doubtful that the founders imagined that the area would become the commercial CBD of Africa.

This unique club now offers much more, with facilities that have a wide appeal. In addition to the equestrian sports, the club has a gym, tennis courts, a swimming pool, two bars, restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, accommodation and a spectacular, large function venue.

Currently available on auction is a 2-night stay for 2 people sharing a double room on a B&B basis.

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz.
I wonder where the birdies is.
They say the birdies on the wing, but that’s absurd.
I always thought the wing was on the bird.

Happy Spring Day! 🥳🌼🌸

You may have noticed that I'm in a particularly chipper mood today and that is because Spring is literally my favourite season of the whole year!

It's not too hot, it's not too cold, the flowers burst into vivid colours, the grass and trees erupt back to life in every shade of green, stunning displays of our migratory birds as they return, the chorus of cicadas, the warm evenings perfect for braai'ing, the bouncing new baby animals everywhere, I could go on and on...

I believe that there is nowhere better in the world to celebrate this magical time of the year and really experience this natural phenomena than in the bushveld!

As Spring rolls into action but just before we get hit by heavy rains that come with Summer, the bush starts getting hotter which means that you can often find large concentrations of animals around the limited water sources making for outstanding game viewing opportunities. Plus, the bush is still not too thick because we haven't had rains yet, so wildlife photography is also particulary good. Because of this, this period is often regarded as the best time for a safari in the Greater Kruger National Park.

Many of us South Africans have been incredibly fortunate to grow up taking our family vacations in the bushveld.

We have cherished memories of touring the Kruger National Park from the back of our parents' Volkswagen Kombis.

We've seen the Big 5 countless times, we've collected all the different camps souvenir stickers, we've watched the wildlife documentaries in the evenings on the outdoor screen of each camp. How could you possibly improve on these nostalgic trips?

I'll tell you how! By making it even more immersive. And a brilliant way of doing this is by staying in a luxury tent rather than brick accommodation.
When sleeping in a luxury tent, you can hear the 'churrr' of the nightjars echoing through the air throughout the night, you can smell the musky scent of the potato bush, the glare of the millions of stars above you seeping through the canvas, you can feel the gentle cool breeze blowing softly over your face through the mesh, you're no longer experiencing the bush, your actually part of it.

Built on wooden decks, Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge offers breathtaking vistas in a natural setting. An inviting open-air reception area opens up into a large, thatched-roof dining room where guests can feast on South African and International cuisine while enjoying the splendid views of the infinite pool and the lush green valley below.

The adjacent open-air lounge, stylishly furnished with every modern comfort in a luxury ethnic design, offers the perfect spot for an early morning coffee or sundowner drinks.

Feel one with nature as you gaze upon the various species of plains game wandering past, grazing on the abundance of vegetation found in the 765ha Likweti Bushveld Estate.

Located in the Mpumalanga Lowveld region, the lodge provides the perfect base from which to visit the acclaimed Kruger National Park and explore the myriad attractions along the Panorama Route.

Currently on auction! Go to https://web.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction/ to place your bid.

Every now and then I will be showcasing a ‘Hidden Gem’ destination.

These are special attractions, activities, and locations off the beaten track and that you wouldn’t necessarily be aware of unless you were a local (or part of the Bid on Travel family). So seriously, if you have visited any of our hidden gems, then you must leave a comment and tell us all about it.

For our first instalment of this feature, I have one of the best kept secrets in the Lowveld situated in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.
The Graeme Naylor Museum – named after the man who has almost single-handedly populated the displays in this amazing facility.

There’s a stunning display of all the freshwater fish found in the reserve. A brilliant photographic poster shows all the frogs you’ll encounter. Stand next to a jaw dropping display of the fabled white lions of the Timbavati and you’ll get an idea how huge these animals are.

Cabinets filled with the most delicate and beautiful butterflies and moths, all found in the reserve, serve as a reminder of the incredible diversity of nature. A huge collection of birds’ eggs covering virtually every species found in South Africa.

Although the museum focuses mainly on the natural history of the Timbavati, many displays cover the whole country. It is important to note that every single animal (with the exception to the insects) found in the museum has died either of natural causes or anthropogenic causes such as road kills, electrocutions, and snares. Kind donations of species carcasses from zoos, animal orphanages, rehabilitation centres have also aided Dr. Graeme Naylor in achieving this most spectacular display.

If this sounds like an interesting visit to you then pop on to the auction group https://web.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction/ . There is currently a stay at the amazing Xanatseni Private Camp up for grabs which is just a short hop, skip and jump from this fascinating museum.

Let’s discuss a Gauteng fave today… Dullstroom!

An easy 2.5-hour drive from Gauteng lies this quaint town.

Known for its charming character, scenic beauty, art galleries, chic cafes, craft beers, whiskey tastings and gosh, the list could continue for days.. this outdoorsy retreat offers a peaceful and picturesque environment, making it a popular weekend getaway for both locals and tourists alike.

It is also a town that I'm fortunate to have called home when I was younger. I grew up in the area and as such have spent my fair share of hours sitting next to crystal-clear streams and dams hoping to land myself a fish or two. Afterall its main claim to fame is that it is the fly-fishing capital of South Africa!

Now, by no means am I pretending to be a professional fly fisher, but I am going to share with you a couple of my fishing insights from my younger days in Dullstroom. (*Dad joke warning*) In an attempt to ‘lure’ you into choosing Dullstroom for your next getaway ;-)

The majority of the streams, rivers and dams in and around Dullstroom are well stocked with two species of trout namely the Rainbow Trout and the Brown Trout.

The Rainbows are generally easier to catch as they are more common, more aggressive so will bite more readily and handle temperature variations better so are more active overall.

However, if you’re anything like me and tend to be a bit of a sucker for punishment then you will find the appeal of catching a shyer and more elusive Brown Trout very exciting indeed.

So, for what it's worth (and please if there are any fishing experts out there who think that I have got anything wrong or have their own tips to add – please feel free to do so in the comments below 👇) here are a couple of my personal tips and tricks for attempting to land a Brownie!

1. Brown Trout have very specific temperature requirements (less
than 21 degrees Celsius) so ensure that you are casting at the
coldest possible times.
2. ‘Match the Hatch’ – Brownies feed sporadically on hatching
insects throughout the day so before you start fishing, have a
look under rocks, around the dam and on top to see what
type of insects are about and then choose a dry fly that most
closely resembles the insects in the area.
3. Every now and again give your dry fly a rub on your t-shirt to
ensure that it stays nice and dry. Otherwise, they will call your
bluff!
4. Wet fly-fishing for brownies is also a good tactic, they will take
insects, fish, frogs and other swimming organisms readily so
choose a wet fly that closely resembles one of these and then
fish a quick retrieve along the bottom of the stream.
5. A favourite wet fly of mine is the wooly bu**er and not just
because it has a cool name, but I’ve been pretty successful
with those in the past.
6. Nymphing works well too. Choose a nymph fly such as a
bloodworm, pop it onto a floating line and then allow it drift
away on the current. Retrieve it slowly using a figure of 8
retrieve.

In case you’re wondering why I am suddenly getting all nostalgic about Dullstroom, head on over to the Bid on Travel Facebook auction - https://web.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction/

Someone is going to score a cracking deal on a 2 night stay for 2 people at the beautiful Trout River Falls.
With five dams and a 2km stretch of the Dorpsriver which offers excellent trout fishing opportunities for both novice and experienced fisherman alike this is the ultimate fly-fishing weekend.

23/03/2023

If you're anything like me and you're always striving to be really organized then you might be very interested in a really cool June / July trip idea that we currently have on the Bid on Travel auction.

If you would love to be dipping your toes in the ocean during your June / July holiday, then the beach along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast might be just what you've been looking for.

It's one of the few places you can don your slops and flop down in the sun during the height of winter. However, the main highlight here (sometime from June) is the imminent start of the Sardine Run.

Although these tasty little fish have been ducking and diving for many years, there's always a chance you'll witness their arrival, which coincides with the glorious sight of aloes in full bloom.

The bulk of South Africa's sardine stock is found in the cooler Cape waters, but each winter, a small proportion moves eastwards up the coast, following a narrow band of cool water.

The winter months also herald the arrival of humpback whales migrating down the coastline from Mozambique. Although unrelated to the Run, whale, porpoise, and dolphin encounters should provide more than enough entertainment while you wait for the sardine action to kick off.

Since the shark nets are removed from most beaches during the Run, the pool at the iconic Blue Marlin Hotel is a safer option for water babies. Based at Scottburgh beach (just an hour's drive from Durbs), there's no better place to hang up the car keys, don your sunnies, and dabble in a few cocktails while watching the spectacle unfold in the ocean below.

Not only is a stay at the fabulous Blue Marlin Hotel currently on auction this week but there are 3 exceptional Kwa-Zulu Natal properties available this week!

You thinking what I'm thinking? Did someone say road-trip.....? 😁

01/03/2023

We often hear the term, 'Greater Kruger' bandied about but what does this actually mean?
Well, the Greater Kruger is the collective name given to the private reserves on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park.

These include the Klaserie, Umbabat, Timbavati, Balule, Manyeleti, and Sabi Sand reserves. These reserves dropped their fences to become part of one pristine tract of protected wilderness and so that the Big 5 and many other species can move completely freely.

For some perspective, the Kruger National Park itself covers almost 20,000 km² - which is about the size of Israel. If you also include the private game reserves with unfenced boundaries of the Greater Kruger area, it's almost the size of Belgium! Over 2 million hectares of free roaming wildlife!

One of the reserves in this impressive Greater Kruger collaboration is the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Having worked in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, I personally have a particularly soft spot for this one!

The Klaserie Covers an impressive 60 000 hectares of the Greater Kruger area alone and was established in 1972 as part of the greater Kruger National Park.
The Klaserie is well known for excellent game viewing. The large herds of herbivores move across this vast area of land, often with carnivores on their spoor. They are attracted by the constant availability of water from the Klaserie River and plentiful grazing. The private lodges are often able to take you off-road if required to view sightings not visible from the roads and you will have an expert tracker and guide team to assist you in your quest of searching for big game. This insures that you get the best game viewing experience possible!

If you are interested in visiting the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, then go check out a stunning property that we currently have available on auction ( https://web.facebook.com/groups/bidontravelauction ) in this amazing reserve. The Xanatseni Private Camp! And if you have been to this wonderful reserve, please post some pics for us all to check out in the comments below.

You may have noticed that this week we have had not one but TWO travel packages on auction in the Greater Kruger National Park area!
Someone is going to score these wonderful stays this evening at 8pm at close of auction!

I thought with this Kruger excitement I would share 5 cultural sites in the Kruger National Park that I have particularly enjoyed visiting. These are my favourites:

1) Letaba Elephant museum
For educational and fun facts about elephants as well as 6 of the Magnificent 7 greatest tuskers

2) Albasini Ruins
These are the remnants of the 19th century trading post of the Portuguese traders from Lourenco Marques (now Maputo Mozambique)

3) Masorini
Where there is evidence of early man from the late Iron Age and advanced methods of mining and trading of iron products

4) Thulamela archaeological sites
This is a stone walled site in northern Kruger dating back over 500 years, comprising of evidence of the Zimbabwean culture
