The Siege of Kimberley took place from 14 October 1899 until 15 February 1900 (a 124 days long siege). Among the citizens present during the siege was the former Cape Colony Prime Minister and Chairman of De Beers, Cecil John Rhodes. This monument commemorates the siege of Kimberley with the locally manufactured field gun, called Long Cecil, at its base.
