Among the Ba'Aka tribe, a fascinating cultural practice is the ritual of carving their top teeth into sharp, shark-like points during childhood. This tradition, typically performed around the ages of nine or ten, involves the individuals biting down on a stick while their teeth are meticulously shaped using a rock or machete.

The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the only sanctuary in Africa that is wholly owned by the local community. Its main goal is to rescue and care for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing them to the wild herds near Reteti.
The sanctuary came to be through a grassroots movement led by the local community. The keepers at Reteti have played a vital role in the conservation of Reticulated Giraffes in northern Kenya. Their efforts have led to a remarkable increase in the giraffe population in Namunyak, going from a mere 20 individuals to an impressive 650 in just 30 years.
