The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the only sanctuary in Africa that is wholly owned by the local community. Its main goal is to rescue and care for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing them to the wild herds near Reteti.
The sanctuary came to be through a grassroots movement led by the local community. It has gained recognition and is quickly growing throughout Northern Kenya and is making a noteworthy impact by generating new economic opportunities, enhancing livelihoods, and safeguarding the natural resources of the region.
