Camping at Sanjan on a trek, we met a group of recently-circumcised Maasai teenagers who were on their way to the nearby village to support an age-mate who was being circumcised the following day. They carried crude musical instruments which they would use to sing and celebrate the first stage in his passage to manhood. A truly special encounter.

After years of exploring Kilimanjaro on two feet, we finally had the chance to climb the slopes on two wheels. Starting at 3200m and climbing to 3750km on the Shira Plateau, we moved off the road, bushwhacked for a couple of kilometres to join day 2 of the Lemosho trail and then followed it back to the evacuation road and back down to Morum at 3200m. The day would not have been complete without the requisite torrential downpour which turned the trail into a fast-flowing river. Want to see Kili from a different perspective? We couldn’t think of anything better…

A massive shout out to our very own Henning Burden for completing the Ultra Trail Cape Town this weekend!

For his first ultramarathon, Henning went big with the UT100, a 100km race, featuring an incredible 4972 meters of elevation gain. This circular route on and around Table Mountain, took in stunning trails that extend from the lower slopes of the mountain to Llandudno, Hout Bay and back via Silvermine, Constantia and the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

Not only did Henning finish strong, but he also secured an impressive 90th place out of 312 entries, with 85 withdrawals, completing the 100 miles in an outstanding 18:53:54.

We’re all so proud of you, Henning!

Namibia offers much more than just desert sand dunes.

This is the view from our campsite today. We always say we follow the road less traveled, and we truly do. Letting our spirit of adventure and some GPS coordinates guide us, we found ourselves here alone to capture this magnificent sight.

Pack your curiosity, leave the crowds behind, and let Active Africa show you the true spirit of this extraordinary country.

Standing between four and five feet tall, the semi-nomadic Ba'Aka tribe have lived autonomously for centuries in the 'Lungs of Africa.'

Among the Ba'Aka tribe, a fascinating cultural practice is the ritual of carving their top teeth into sharp, shark-like points during childhood. This tradition, typically performed around the ages of nine or ten, involves the individuals biting down on a stick while their teeth are meticulously shaped using a rock or machete.

At Active Africa, we believe in going beyond the ordinary - with a commitment to creating authentic, unique cultural experiences for our clients.
