Khaki Fever Safaris Unique and tailor-made African safaris that are crafted to suit your interests and needs. For travel WHO ARE WE? WHY CHOOSE KHAKI FEVER?
(16)

We are passionate about travel, and passionate about Africa. Khaki Fever is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was born out of its founder’s, Julie’s, obsession with Africa and with travel. Julie has been going “to the bush” – or on safari – for as long as she can remember. From mobile safaris in Zimbabwe, island-hopping in the Seychelles, and road-tripping around South Africa; to the luxury

lodges of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, hiking the unforgettable Otter Trail, and kayaking between the tropical islands of Madagascar, Julie has seen and experienced what Africa has to offer, first hand. Pursuing a career in the travel industry is not only a job for Julie, it fulfills a deep passion for travel and for Africa, and allows her to provide others with unforgettable, and life-changing African experiences. Thanks to Julie’s in-depth knowledge of Africa, her relationships within the travel industry, and her high standards for service and authentic African experiences, Khaki Fever has mastered the planning and facilitation of great African adventures, so that you don’t have to! Safari operators are a dime a dozen in Africa, so deciding who to use can be overwhelming and confusing. Do they really have your interests at heart?

• Khaki Fever is a small company “on the ground” in Africa. Come straight to us and avoid agents and middle-men who add on a margin and increase your end cost. We believe in the personal touch and creating meaningful relationships with our guests, so that we can really understand what it is you want for your vacation.

• We are allergic to the “tour group”, “one-size-fits-all” approach to creating your African adventure. We want to know what YOU want, while providing the most authentic and personal experiences.

• We are seasoned travelers ourselves, so we understand what you want and need. We also know that you’re spending your precious time away from work, your savings or hard-earned salary on this holiday, and you need someone you trust to make it worthwhile. Khaki Fever is all about giving you fantastic value for your money, while creating an unforgettable adventure, that’s uniquely yours!

• We know Southern Africa like the back of our hand, and we’ve traveled it ourselves! We’re all about giving you an incredible, authentic African adventure, far away from the heavily-trodden tourist routes.

• We don’t believe in rushing you between destinations or packing your holiday full of activities that you may not even be interested in – some people might not actually want a cultural tour of the local village, they’d rather go on a privately guided birding walk. It’s your holiday, and you need to relax too!

• We are a small, passionate, owner-run company that really does want to give you the most incredible experience of Africa – we’re passionate about our continent and we want to share it with you! You are not just a number, and we’re not a big corporate where your enquiry will get bounced between countless agents trying to up-sell you in order to get a bigger commission.

• Khaki Fever also visits every property that we send our guests to, to ensure they adhere to our high standards. And we’re not talking about gold taps and 6-course meals, we’re talking about authentic and unforgettable experiences; value-for-money-luxury; tasteful decor; excellent service; environmental sensitivity; and outstanding hospitality.

• Going through Khaki Fever also means you pay the same price as booking directly with the lodge or bush camp yourself. We get our commission from the properties, not from you. So, take the slog out of researching and planning your next trip, and let us do it!

We've been absent from Instagram for quite some time! Wow. It's been a busy time for our Khaki Fever team, we've welcomed a new child to the family and we've been keeping busy with lots of exciting new trips and new clients since the pandemic ended. Unfortunately though, this has left little time for social media updates!

We're back though and feeling more excited and inspired than ever to be in the travel industry, and more specifically to be doing what we do in the vibrant, beautiful, exciting continent of Africa! See you soon 🌍☀️🦁🐾🦓

This is our idea of paradise.

An unobtrusive room in the remote African bush with an unrestricted view of the riverfront action.

It's in these peaceful, surrounded-by-nature, unadulterated wildernesses that you get to feel a real disconnection from the "real world" and at the same time, a strong connection to nature in its most raw and pure form.

As trite as it may sound, there's nothing quite like it for the mind and soul!

Dugongs are cousins of manatees but unlike manatees, which use freshwater areas, the dugong lives a strictly marine life and feeds on seagrasses in shallow waters.

And the best place to see these peaceful creatures? Off Mozambique's glorious Bazaruto Archipelago. The area is a protected marine reserve and in 2021 the biggest recorded herd was seen - 57 individuals! A really special sight considering that just seeing a few together is extremely rare.

Bazaruto offers the most idyllic island experience and can easily be incorporated into a safari in South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, or Botswana 👌🌴

A mother cheetah's four cubs have recently been discovered at Manyoni Private Game Reserve, and they are adorable!

This mum would have kept them hidden from other predators for several weeks, but now they are growing into busy little kittens and need to start practicing their stalking and hunting skills out in the open.

Sadly, only around 10% of cheetah cubs survive to adulthood, so here's hoping these little ones make it all the way! 🤞

This is the middle of winter in South Africa's Kwa-Zulu Natal safari region!

Normally, this time of year is dry and dusty with sparse vegetation, but not here. This area of the country is dominated by lush sycamore fig trees and emerald beauty at every turn.

This is one of favorite spots in Manyoni Private Game Reserve - the dry Msundusi riverbed provides a gorgeous "stage" to view some of the reserve's most iconic inhabitants 💚

This stunning image of a spotted hyena was shot by a camera trap in Laikipia, a wildlife region north of Nairobi.

Laikipia encompasses private wildlife reserves and sanctuaries where endangered species such as black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and wild dogs are common sights - with few other vehicles or people!

Steeped in history from the colonial days in Kenya, Laikipia is a significant natural area from a safari and conservation perspective and is a fantastic option for those looking for a high-end safari away from the crowds of Kenya's busier parks and reserves 👌

What traditional foods can you expect to try on safari?

Diets vary across Africa, but staple starches like corn, bread, and rice are inevitably eaten in some way, shape, or form.
Typical sides are:
🌽 pap (similar to polenta, bottom right)
🍚 samp & beans (a more coarsely ground form of grits, top right)
🥬 morogo (African spinach, bottom left)

Main meals include:
🍲 poitjie (traditional meat stew cooked over the fire, top left)
🥩 tripe (stomach lining of animals usually cooked in a saucy stew)
🍗 shisanyama (essentially barbequed meat, bottom left)

We absolutely love a poitjie with creamy pap! Have you tried any of these local delicacies?

This has to be one of the sweetest antelopes in Africa.

The Klipspringer (translated from Afrikaans its name is "rock jumper") is virtually never seen off a rock!

You can spot it in rocky areas like Pafuri and its small, delicate-looking hooves are specially designed for traction on the smooth rocks - they even have a suction-cup effect - and can be seen springing 12 feet (3,6 m) from one rock to the next!

The Kruger National Park is the size of Israel but apart from a few koppies (rocky outcrops) dotted over its landscape, it's generally pretty flat... Until you get to Pafuri!

The Pafuri region is home to Lanner Gorge (pictured) and the dramatic cliffs that surround the gorge, offering visitors spectacular views across Kruger and all the way to neighboring Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Pafuri is not only one of the few true wilderness areas left in South Africa, but it's also the traditional homeland of the Makuleke people who are one-half of a successful partnership with the area's commercial operators - the Makuleke are equity partners, employees, and landlords, ensuring everyone has a vested interest in preserving Pafuri 🙌

Our clients arrive in magnificent Pafuri today 🌳

Pafuri is the wildest and most remote part of the Kruger National Park (northernmost point) and is well known for its exceptional baobab trees and its groves of lime green-colored fever trees.

This is the place to go for a truly wild Kruger experience where you'll see few other people and can embark on unforgettable walking safaris amidst towering trees, herds of elephants, magnificent birdlife, and dramatic scenery! 🙌

Africa's large predators won't tolerate each other at all.
They see each other as competition for food and if their paths cross there'll almost certainly be a fight to the death (if neither one backs away quickly).

In this situation, the hyena is bigger and stronger than the leopard, so although the leopard appears to be confronting the hyena, it would have probably just been a snarl and a quick "watch out" before scampering away and up a tree.

There's no pride in the wild, if an animal knows he's going to come off second best, there's no chance he's going to risk his life!

Deep in Odzala National Park, Republic of Congo, you will find this hidden gem!

A focal point for world-class primate research, as well as unforgettable primate encounters, Ngaga Camp overlooks a canopy of primary rainforest. Its unique design evokes the fun and mystery of childhood treehouses, with wraparound walkways to gaze directly into the forest.

It's in this unspoiled sanctuary that you can spot the ‘Forest Five’ unique to this region: Western Lowland Gorilla, Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Bongo, and Giant Forest Hog 👀

Impressive catch!

This Giant kingfisher is Africa's biggest kingfisher species and can be seen along riverways and near freshwater in most wild areas south of the Sahara Desert.

Pairs mate for life and together male and female use their feet and beaks to excavate their nest (a horizontal tunnel) in river banks! The tunnel is typically 2m (6 ft 7 in) in length but a tunnel of 8.5m (28 ft) has been recorded! 😲

We firmly believe that nature is the classroom!

Many safari lodges offer programs designed especially for your children to make the most out of their safari experience. They offer funfilled, interactive activities that offer opportunities to learn and discover new experiences and cultures.

Activities vary depending on your location and may involve tracking animals, bird identification, fishing, making traditional bows and arrows, beading, crafting, and painting.

A safari may just be the best vacation you ever give your young children!🌱🐾💡🔥🐛🦓🧠💚

A watering hole is always a great place to spend several hours watching the local inhabitants come and go... It's the bush equivalent of your local railway station or bar - there are always some interesting sights or entertainment on offer!

It's an obvious spot for predators to hang out, and the promise of a drink attracts beautiful birds and unusual animals that'll likely visit during the course of the day.

If you're really lucky (or unlucky), you may even see a submerged crocodile grab one of the wading drinkers! 🐊

You're spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury (and beautiful) places to stay in Cape Town, but Ellerman House is definitely in our top 3!

Here, you will be shown the very best of South Africa, from their heartfelt hospitality to their immense art and wine collections to their lush gardens, stylish interiors, and, of course, incredible views of Cape Town's Atlantic coastline.

For the ultimate South Africa itinerary, visit the Sabi Sands Private Reserve in the Greater Kruger for an unforgettable safari before catching a direct flight to Cape Town for a spoily stay at Ellerman House 😉

There are always unexpected pops of color on safari!

From the iridescent purple feathers of sunbirds and coral-colored flowering trees to this handsome Southern tree agama 💙

In our spring months (Aug-Sep) you can see this male's bright blue head pop out from between rocks and bushes in search of a female. It's mating time and this is his best stab at impressing the ladies. Not bad!

It was always thought that male elephants (once they leave their maternal herd at around 10 years old) live a solitary life and only interact with females when it's time to mate.

In 2020, a study came out that concluded that in fact, in areas like Botswana, male elephants form their own bachelor herds that have the same complex family and social dynamics as their original maternal herds. This pattern is also true for other long-lived mammals like dolphins and whales, where the older, wiser "grandfathers" take charge and pass down important information and learnings to the younger males ❤️🐘

Your best chance of seeing elephants in their numbers is in Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe!

With a long list of exceptional safari destinations to choose from (and so many varied experiences within these countries to try), it can be hard to pick a destination for your next (or first!) safari 😳

Each country offers something unique, which is why many lovers of Africa come back each and every year. That said, we cannot recommend Zambia highly enough!
It's less busy than Kenya and Tanzania, and less expensive than Botswana, yet it offers the most exceptional wildlife experience in some of the most beautiful and untouched parks 🐾🐘🦁

There are 5-star bush camps and utter privacy in areas where you will likely not see another vehicle. Zambia truly is a "hidden gem", and well worth your time!

Why's it always the men who get the long lashes?!

The ground hornbill is Earth's biggest hornbill species and can be seen in dry woodland areas in places like South Africa, Botswana, and Kenya.

During the mating season, this male's red throat pouch expands like a balloon and is used to make booming calls that can be heard by females over long distances. The sound is so deep and powerful that oftentimes it's mistaken for a lion’s roar!

A mokoro (traditional dugout) allows you to explore the Okavango Delta's waterways at lilypad level, exposing all its little inhabitants like reed frogs, fish, insects, and mini kingfishers (and crocs and hippos!). It's also an incredibly peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy a morning or afternoon safari 💆

Happy weekend, all!

Gonarezhou's remoteness in southern Zimbabwe means this national park gets few visitors, but that's the exact reason why you should head to this wildlife Eden.

Specialist walking safari (and all-around amazing) guide, Ant Kaschula, leads life-changing walking and "glamping" experiences in Gonarezhou where herds of countless elephants, buffalo, and antelope are common sightings, as are large packs of wild dogs and prides of lions. And most importantly, there are no people!

This is a truly "off the beaten track" experience that allows you to see nature as it's always existed.

Africa's "big cats" get lots of airtime, but seeing the smaller felines is often times harder (they're generally rarer), and seriously special, like a sighting of this gorgeous serval.

She's nocturnal, so in low light her enormous ears have ultrasonic ability allowing her to pick up the high-pitched communication between rodents all around her. Like most cats, she's an excellent hunter - standing on her hind legs, she can jump more than 9 feet (2.7 meters) straight up to grab a bird right out of the air!

She also uses her long, curved claws to hook fish and frogs right out of the water! 🐱🧡

Your safari experience should focus on the spectacular environment around you, but it doesn't hurt to have a gorgeous inside environment too 😊

We love the grassy yellow hues in Khwai Leadwood Lodge's lounge area, and the comforting fireplace is a massive plus in the winter months!

Doesn't a lodge's beautiful decor just make you feel instantly relaxed and calm?!

19/07/2022

As the dry season continues and water sources become scarce, the pressure hippos face in finding a pool to call home is high.

Dominant males are fiercely territorial and will not allow any other males to join their pool or pod (unless they arrive happy to be the underdog), and on most occasions, it'll take a fierce and bloody battle between them to determine who can stay and who must go.

Sometimes ownership changes and the old bull must limp off and admit defeat, but usually, the dominant male is bigger and more experienced than the younger newcomer, and he'll keep his turf (and pod!), but will certainly have new battle scars. It's a tough world out there! 🦛⚔️

Looking for a romantic getaway or honeymoon destination that'll knock your partner's socks right off?

Kisawa is set on over 700 acres of protected forest, beach, and sand dunes on the southern tip of Benguerra Island in Mozambique, where the surrounding marine reserve is home to some of the richest and least explored habitats in the Indian Ocean.

Kisawa also offers luxury and privacy like nowhere else, with each residence housed within its own one-acre plot, offering minimum disturbance and maximum appreciation of the natural environment 👌🥰💕 You (but more importantly, your loved one) will not be disappointed!

Our clients are enjoying an exhilarating adventure on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe! Their canoe safari takes them along a stretch of the Zambezi along Mana Pools National Park where they'll spend each night of the 3-night trail glamping at a gorgeous campsite on the river bank.

If getting feet away from elephants, hippos, and crocs doesn't get the blood pumping, nothing will! 👀
