We’ve grown over the last six months! I mean this literally. Binge eating, binge-watching Netflix, binge crying ourselves to sleep (yes, it’s a real thing). We have spring cleaned and homeschooled, stared at our phones and our four walls. Our moods have jumped the ‘rational curve’ more times than we’ve asked ourselves if our wine stock was sufficient. Okay, maybe not as many times as we’ve worried about that.

But, to quote Bob Dylan: “The times they are a-changin’”.

As the sunlight of a new season starts to blossom our South African senses, at Can Discover we are also emerging from the chrysalis of the COVID crisis – but stronger and more enthusiastic than ever. We’re done with hibernating: gowns have been tossed to the back of the cupboard, our fridges are stocked with healthier foods and we are embracing the new world while recalling how much more there is still to discover.

Day 4 - Visit to Port Louis Market and overnight at Lagoon Attitude

The market was packed, hot, filled with an abundance of smells and the brightest fruit and vegetables I’ve ever seen. The custard apple is so delicious and tastes just like custard! Bring your best haggling skills as everything is first quoted at about double the price that they finally offer.

Lagoon Attitude provided super exposure to a hotel group that puts a lot of emphasis on conservation and being eco-smart. The water was aquamarine and about 27 degrees. The hotel has such an interesting concept in how they split the rooms into different areas of the hotel: Local, Lively and Laid-Back. This is a hotel I would love to come back to.

Day 3 - Intercontinental Hotel

With absolutely no preconceived ideas before arrival, I got goosebumps when I looked over the balcony at reception!

Wrap-around Palm-treed peninsular creating a tranquil alcove for swimming, it is truly the stuff of tropical island dreams 🌴🏝

Your choice of loungers or cabanas along the wide strip of sandy beach, or next to either of the pools (both of which are heated in winter) - perfect for lazy days catching up on your reading ☀️

Kids Club and Teen Programme mean that the kids will never be bored and the choice of restaurants in the All Inclusive mean that no one will ever be hungry!

Family rooms offer one room with two single rooms and main room with king bed.

The hotel stretches a long expanse and it felt spacious and quiet.

For destination weddings, I can definitely picture a fairytale celebration in this idyllic location!

Intercontinental, you were a definite win for me!

Day 2 - Hilton Mauritius

I was very pleasantly surprised to experience, firsthand, the warmth and tropical atmosphere at the Hilton Mauritius.

I had always, incorrectly, classified the hotel as a more corporate hotel, but it is a perfect fit for families, honeymooners and anyone who is looking for a Half Board option instead of All Inclusive.

The sunsets are the perfect backdrop to aperitifs on the beach 🌅 The restaurants, a la carte and buffet, are guaranteed to blow you away with the taste explosion from the chefs talented culinary skills. 🥘

Water sports are on offer for the adventurous as well as the leisurely traveller.

In winter, one of the swimming pools is heated so, to escape the SA chill, west is best 😉

If you’re worried about the Half Board option, it is good to know that there are specials available to guests for lunch and drinks. There are also dining and refreshments options within walking distance of the hotel.

Day 2 - Souillac Kids Fun Day

Something I feel very passionate about is adding an element of “voluntourism” to your holiday and giving back to the community that you are visiting.

High five 🖐 to Thompsons for incorporating this stationery drive into our itinerary. Interacting with the kids and parents while being entertained by the band has been a special experience.

Day 2 - Lunch at RIU Le Morne

Situated right next to RIU Creole, guests staying at Le Morne get to enjoy the restaurants and facilities of both hotels.

This Adults Only hotel is for those looking for a 4* hotel experience in a tranquil setting. With very competitive rates, a package holiday here won’t disappoint - with 4* amenities at 3* prices.

Laze your days away soaking up the sun at the sparkling pool or adjoining beachfront. The restaurant offers a more refined meal selection and the rooms are of a higher standard than it’s neighbouring sister hotel.

If you’ve left anything at home, the convenience store next to reception will come in handy.

Now this is starting to feel like an idyllic tropical getaway... 🌴 🌊

Day 1 - Overnight RIU Creole in south-west Mauritius

The hotel is a large, expansive property that will get you achieving your daily step goal if you’re situated far from restaurant and pool.

Positives include lots of amenities such as ample swimming pool, tennis court, variety of water sports, very friendly staff, long stretch of beach with a calm sea.

It is an All Inclusive hotel and the restaurant caters good food, from pizza and pasta to salad and aromatic curries. It isn’t fine dining but even the fussiest kids will find something to make them smile 😀.

If you’d like to continue your beauty regime while on holiday, you can visit the onsite gym, spa or beauty salon.

The rooms leave me conflicted 😐 They are LARGE - 2-bedroom with bathroom and separate toilet. You can accommodate up to 2 x adults and 3 x teenagers in a unit. This means a big saving if you’re travelling as a family. However, although the resort is aesthetically pleasing, the rooms aren’t. They are very basic and there is no real consideration put into decor. Once you’re in your room at night, it feels a bit like staying in a basic airport hotel anywhere in the world.

I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for a honeymoon, owing to the lack of intimacy.

I would, however, recommend this hotel for young people who want evening entertainment, larger families wanting 3*, and anyone who wants to experience Mauritius on a budget - I mean who wants to spend time in the room when you’re in paradise ☀️ 🏖

I have to reiterate, the staff are amazing and will go out of their way to make your stay feel unforgettable

Arriving in Mauritius to the exotic sounds of our welcome party! Wonderful to experience the tropical dance and music to get into the island vibe. Felt like royalty being part of the Thompson’s group!

Having never flown Air Mauritius and having no idea of what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of service and comfortable seats. My opinion might be influenced because I was lucky enough to have three seats to myself! I am now confident to send clients on Air Mauritius and know they will be taken care of ✈️

The only downside of the Air Mauritius flight is the time that it lands. Sun is already down and some of the roads are dark - not ideal if you’re planning a self-drive. If you take a transfer, the Mauritian transfer drivers will be especially appreciated by those who enjoy a bit of an adrenaline rush 😉 Was just a pity to miss out on the scenery during our 1 hour 20 minute transfer to RIU Creole Hotel

Singapore Air launches the world's longest flight

Singapore Airlines launched the world’s longest commercial flight, between Singapore and New York, on Thursday, October 11.

The new non-stop flight departed Changi International Airport at 23h37 (SIN time) and arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport a day later, at 05h29 (US Eastern time). The flight duration was 17 hours 52 minutes.

Operated by the new Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range), the route will initially be served thrice-weekly, departing Singapore on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Daily operations will commence from October 18 after an additional A350-900ULR aircraft enters service.

To commemorate the inaugural flight, customers departing from Singapore were treated to an evening of performances and an assortment of food and beverages at a special boarding gate event. Customers enjoyed special wellness cuisine prepared by chefs and nutritionists from Canyon Ranch, in addition to the airline’s own meal selections and creations by its International culinary panel of chefs. They also received a goodie bag containing a commemorative certificate and a pair of SIA-branded Bodum glasses.

To ensure the comfort of passengers, the aircraft was enhanced with sleep strategies and specific cabin lighting settings for improved rest and relaxation.

The myKrisWorld on-board entertainment provided content recommendations based on customer preferences and viewing history. KrisFlyer members can save and resume content, create playlists, and customise their preferences for subsequent flights. They also have access to 200 additional hours of in-flight entertainment content.

Travellers also experience high-speed in-flight WiFi service on the A350-900ULR. Equipped with Panasonic Avionics’ new satellite modem that operates with its third-generation satellite network, the service is capable of delivering higher-speed Internet to customers.
