Today we will venture off Route 62 for a detour through the Baviaanskloof. Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area is one of South Africa's World Heritage Sites, and the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve is one of the largest wilderness conservation areas in the country. This wonderful wilderness area is crisscrossed exclusively by dirt roads some of which are very steep and narrow and known to be treacherous at times, so a 4 x 4 is generally advisable. The Baviaanskloof area with its unspoiled, rugged mountainous terrain offers a wide range of eco-recreational activities as well as a unique wilderness experience. Although not for the faint-hearted a visit to Baviaanskloof is an experience not to be forgotten. Today we travel a short distance to the picturesque village of St Francis Bay. The specific style of architecture ensures a harmonious blend of homes which, linked by canals, are set against a background of sea, beaches and lush greenery. St Francis Bay is a popular tourist destination with visitors flocking there to enjoy the glorious beaches, excellent water-sports, and the beauty of its unspoilt surroundings. Just outside St Francis Bay, you find Cape St Francis, surrounded by nature reserves and a pristine 5km beach and sand dunes, encompassed by 2 points, Shark Point and Seal Point, Seal Point being the third most southerly point in South Africa. Here you will find the Cape St Francis Light House, a National Monument, built in 1878. Oyster Bay is a tiny hamlet a little further along the coast, and is renowned for long stretches of sandy beach and a strong emphasis on preserving their natural environment as it boasts an extremely large coastal and marine biological diversity. Visiting these villages to immerse oneself in the peace and beauty is time well spent indeed. The town has a rather surprising eco-sustainable building as its cultural center where traditional San art is exhibited. Humansdorp is the gateway to the nearby coastal villages of Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay. From Prince Albert we travel along through the scenic Meiringspoort Pass, a road that weaves its way through the steep-walled, sandstone layers of the Cape Fold Mountains, crossing the Groot River, whose path it tracks, 25 times before we arrive in the village of De Rust where we pick up Route 62 again. De Rust is a unique and quaint Victorian village. The village might be small, but it is charming and has become something of a haven for artists and is famous for its dessert wines and cheeses, and more recently for the award winning De Rustica Olive Estate situated just outside the village. Next stop: Calitzdorp - known as the Port capital of South Africa due to the quality of the port wines made by the local wine cellars. Apart from the exceptional dessert and port-style wines, the local cellars also produce a diverse selection of white and red wines, as well as whisky and brandy. The town was established on a farm called Buffelsvlei and, according to early writings, the fertile valley it is situated in, was originally a lake. It is an old village with architectural treasures, some serving as great examples of the sandstone architecture of the ostrich-era in the area. Calitzdorp is well known for its picturesque beauty, superb Klein Karoo wines and vibrant restaurants, while the nearby surroundings provide opportunities for enjoying pursuits like hiking and mountain biking. Well worth a visit. Contact us on [email protected] for more information or to have us design a bespoke tour based on your requirements. Tomorrow we travel further …..

As we continue our journey along the Cape Route 62, we start the new week in Ladismith, a charming hamlet with mountains on the one side and plains on the other, with vegetation ranging . The Klein Swartberg mountain range towers above the town, the highest peak, ‘magic mountain’ or Towerkop, is said to have been struck by a witch in anger because it blocked her way over the mountain. The result was a deep split at the top of the mountain, producing two perfect halves. The unique ‘Ladismith’ style of architecture has evolved from the mixture of several styles including Victorian, Edwardian, Cape Dutch, and Regency, and several buildings have been declared National Monuments. Ladismith is essentially a prosperous farming community producing fruit (grapes, a third of South Africa’s apricots, and plums), milk, wine, flowers and mutton. The town also has two cheese factories. For its unspoilt nature, starry nights and warm, clear days, the little town of Ladismith, is a lovely place to visit.
