Our last stop in Kwa-Zulu Natal is the awe-inspiring and majestic Drakensberg Mountains - a place of rugged beauty made up of plateaus, peaks, cliffs and deep valleys. The Range stretches along the eastern side of South Africa and is the highest mountain in South Africa. The average height of the range is 2 900 meters, with the highest peaks surging up to 3 482 meters above sea level. The Drakensberg Mountain Range showcases spectacular views. Most of the South African side of high part of the range has been designated as game reserve/wilderness area. The uKhahlamba or Drakensberg National Park, located near the border with Lesotho, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2000 as a World Heritage site. Within this Park there are some 600 sites of Bushmen San rock paintings, collectively representing over 35,000 individual images, the oldest of which is estimated to be about 2400 years old. Many of the scenes depict hunting, dancing, fighting, food gathering and rituals. The most well known park in the Drakensberg Mountains is the Royal Natal National Park. It contains the source of the Tugela river, as well as the 912m high Tugela Falls - the second highest waterfall on earth. Between and amongst these peaks are plateaus, valleys, slopes, and mountain passes that make for some of the best hiking, walking and cycling adventures in South Africa. Animals likely to be seen include the enormous Eland, Reedbuck, curious Baboons, and the highly endangered and endemic Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier). The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park lies in the Kalahari Desert, a large sand-filled basin in the west of the southern African subcontinent. The Park straddles both South Africa and Botswana and created an enormous conservation area of over 3,6 million hectares, one of the very few of this magnitude in the world. The Park is characterised by vast arid landscapes with red dunes, sparse vegetation and camel thorn trees. Animals tend to gather in the dry river beds and waterholes. Herds of Gemsbok, Springbok, Eland and Blue Wildebeest follow the seasons, closely watched by prides of Black-Mane Lion. 17/10/2024

Augrabies Falls National Park is a national park located around the Augrabies Falls. The original Khoikhoi people named the waterfall Ankoerebis, meaning the “place of big noises”. The Park covers an area of 820 km² and stretches along the Orange River. The waterfall is about 60 metres high and is awe-inspiring when the river is in flood. The gorge below the falls averages about 240 m deep and runs for 18 kilometres. The gorge provides an impressive example of erosion into a granitic basement. The most characteristic plant in the park is the giant aloe (Aloe dichotoma) known locally as the quiver tree or kokerboom. It gets its name from the fact that the Bushmen (San) used the soft branches to make quivers for their arrows. When the tree flowers in the winter flocks of birds are attracted to the nectar, and baboons can be seen tearing the flowers apart to get the sweet liquor. The Augrabies Falls waterfall and the adjoining ravine are magnificent sights to behold and a highly recommended destination.
