The following rare birds in South Africa are prized sightings for avid birders: (1) The White-winged Flufftail is considered one of the rarest and most threatened waterbirds in Africa. It is a globally Critically Endangered bird, facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. This small, elusive bird is one of nine flufftail species in Africa and is known to only occur in the high-altitude wetlands of South Africa and Ethiopia. (2) The Taita Falcon is a short-tailed raptor and is considered one of the rarest in South Africa and Africa. These small falcons are listed as critically endangered. The Taita Falcon feeds almost exclusively on small birds, with all prey taken in flight. (3) The Cape Parrot is a medium to large parrot with colourful olive, green and red plumage. The only occur in South Africa and is closely associated with yellowwood forests. The Cape Parrot prefers the fruit kernels of yellowwood trees, but will also feed on the kernels of other forest fruit including wild plum, white stinkwood, ironwood, and white pear.
