When the holidays get too much for everyone!! Especially when you have two babies under your wing. Some recently acquired feathered (uninvited) guests, enjoying the heat and sand bathing.
If Christmas was a bird, it would surely have to be the Knysna Turaco!! Rainy day and all spruced up for the festive season.
After days of oppressive heat, to the delight of the garden, the rain arrived overnight. Was too funny to see a bunch of baby birds who had never experienced "rain on their parade". Gorgeous to watch.
"Imagine if birds were tickled by feathers. You'd see a flock of birds come by, laughing hysterically!"
Steven Wright
It has been a long hard winter, but like nature's clock predicts, Tinkie the Whydah has returned to perform his mating ritual. Although still semi-dressed in his finery, he again chooses to admire or fight his reflection. Welcome home little man. I await your brides!
Sunshine flushed out my fine feathered friends today. And who better to perform for, than an audience of guests. The Knysna Turaco flashed his finery, the Oriole strutted his yellow feathers, and the drongo's as usual just applauded loudly!
A peep of sunshine between rain clouds this morning, gave this Coucal an opportunity to stretch out his wings and dry his drenched feathers. I was just left wondering if his gorgeous white collar is soft or spiky?
The sweetest little guest visiting on a cold winter day.
Over the last month or two, guests and I have contended with the erratic behaviour of "my" Pin-tailed Whydah. From sunrise to sunset, having evolved from a scruffy bird dressed in scruffy pj's, he emerged as a beautiful long-tailed, ill-tempered, reflection obsessed beauty. The mating dance a part of his everyday life. Then, within a month, the tweeting and aggression waned, and yesterday, wife and husband arrived with two fluff ball babies. Waking up in Knysna can only be described as a heavenly gift.

Catch of the day. A seldom seen Kingfisher stopping off for a drink.
The resident Pin-tailed Whydah has been keeping guests amused with his crazy antics. Here he is doing his mating dance for one of his two wives. I am not quite sure when his coat tails will fall off, and he will return to his plain regular suit. Hoping he leaves me a feather or two!
Everyday in paradise offers a surprise. I have never seen a Knysna Loerie of this size, plus the added bonus of a fanned tail. Made me recall the excitement of guests, when they spot one. Jim Elles look what you missed! Making beds for guests can be fun, as there is always a great side show.
For all your woofs, meoows and praise. Thank you to all of my very special guests who have made great memories, and enjoyed my little piece of paradise. ###

To all my wonderful guests, two legged and four, thank you all for for staying and enjoying!
My view this morning as I prepared the apartment for arriving guests. House work need not be dull! Wishing everyone safe and happy holidays. xx
A guest asked me recently, if birds have tail envy!....(and yes, I cut the grass today).
On the scale of tail, Sugarbirds win! A good bath and then a great spruce up. Very handsome guests are always welcome.
"Water is a scarce resource in Knysna. Did you hear?", says Weaver to Sugarbird. "Well take this buddy".
Looking forward to all my guests arriving for the holidays. Travel safely.

Knysna is a small town, with a lot of natural beauty. It has five species named after it: The Knysna Turaco (loerie), Knysna Warbler, Knysna Woodpecker, Knysna Dwarf Chameleon and the Knysna Seahorse. And now we have our beautiful Knysna Turaco etched onto the 2023 50c piece. Come to Knysna! See them all!
It's Pin-tailed Whydah Sunday in Knysna. More of a Peeping Tom, as he loves to look at himself in the Rest Inn Knysna sliding glass doors. A case of hard to be humble.
Always exciting when an Elephant is spotted roaming the forest.
An overcast day in Knysna, but the birds are out and about enjoying a little cool weather. Poked my head out, and found this pretty little Loerie checking out possible accommodation. He certainly appreciated the banana as a self-catering offer.

A crazy head banging Whydah, who is having moments with his reflection, and a larger than birdbath size Ibis, make for an interesting Friday! Hope your feathers are all fluffed for a great weekend. ###
A prouder bird mama there isn't! Weavers are the full of nonsense birds of the garden, but just such fun. Always welcome to my hospitality, even though their manners can be questioned at times. 😂 Full of character all the way.😍
When your Easter bonnet gets drenched, and your'e not looking your best, your eyes still spot the prize. Loerie's always look on the bright side, regardless. The sun will come out in the end. Happy holiday weekend! Never mind the weather, so long as you are together! 💧
A surprise visitor on the Rest Inn Knysna driveway. Normally active on a nocturnal basis, this curious bird, the Spotted Thick-knee, commonly known as the Gewone Dikkop, held my attention for hours. The mechanics of his legs are really fascinating! And his call is totally haunting, especially as darkness set in.
Burchell's Coucal. Iv'e always considered this beautiful songster as the harbinger of rain. And this time, this calling pair are not wrong. Hopefully the last cold and wet snap for the Garden Route before Spring springs. This pair have been calling each other for days now, and it's such a calming sound in a crazy world. Enjoy!!....and here comes more rain. Very reliable messengers.
The early bird catches the worm. The last seasonal cherry guavas catch the Loeries. All kinds of antics to catch the low hanging fruit.
Berries, Banana, and Bauhenia flowers! Rest Inn Knysna offers all things good when it comes to self-catering. It is now the season of the Cherry Guava, and lucky guests are likely to see the birds trying to find the ripe ones. But it seems that green also works!!
