๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Busy days, big impact in Piketberg with Liv! ๐Ÿ’ฅ
Our volunteer Liv is making waves in Steynville and Eendekuil โ€” not only leading PE lessons but also helping organise the upcoming Handball Municipality Cup ๐Ÿ†. Here's what she's been up to:

๐Ÿคพ Handball Highlights
Afternoon practices are buzzing with energy as kids prepare for the big tournament!
Whatโ€™s especially powerful? New players and experienced ones are learning to train and play together, building teamwork and celebrating every small win ๐ŸŽ‰.
๐Ÿ—ฃ โ€œSeeing how the kids support each other โ€” whether they just started or have been playing for a while โ€” is one of the best parts,โ€ says Liv. โ€œThe excitement the kids show when I arrive for PE makes every day special,โ€ she adds.
In Eendekuil, Liv is introducing older learners to handball with fun mini-games โœจ, while the little ones enjoy relay races and stretching sessions โ€” joyful, active breaks from the class room that keep everyone smiling.

๐Ÿค Community Life
Liv has become a familiar face in the local sport community. After school, she joins in at rugby ๐Ÿ‰ and netball ๐Ÿ matches, cheering from the sidelines and lending a hand to local coaches. The spirit of sport is alive and infectious! Even with a few language challenges, Livโ€™s Afrikaans is coming along, and the connection with the kids speaks louder than words ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you, Liv, for bringing your passion, heart, and sports spirit to the playgrounds! You're making a difference for the kids in Piketberg and Eendekuil! ๐ŸŒŸ

Exciting News from Wesley Practising School! ๐ŸŽ‰

Weโ€™re thrilled to announce a new partnership with Wesley Practising School in Salt River, where our amazing volunteer Mathis works twice a week! ๐Ÿ™Œ

On Mondays, Mathis coaches Grade 4 and 5 students, and on Thursdays, he works with Grade 6 and 7. Wesley is a commuter school, with children coming from various townships by bus.
For many, handball is a completely new experience โ€“ but their enthusiasm and talent shine through as they eagerly listen and learn! ๐Ÿ’ชMathis holds the sessions outside in the schoolyard, adapting the space to fit handball activities.
Beyond the sport itself, he enjoys connecting with the children during breaks or after training, learning about their lives and sharing meaningful conversations. Itโ€™s a unique experience that brings together children from different backgrounds, creating new opportunities for growth, teamwork, and fun.โœจ

Handball at Wesley Practising School is off to a great start, and weโ€™re excited to see this journey unfold!๐Ÿคพ๐Ÿฝ

๐ŸŽ“ Experience That Makes an Impact
A former Kenyan national team player, Brian brings both passion and expertise to his role. In 2022, with our support, he took part in the International Trainer Course at Leipzig University โ€” strengthening his knowledge in coaching, sport development, and youth leadership.

๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿค GOALS BEYOND THE GAME
Highlighting how PLAY HANDBALL supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in action.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’™ This weekโ€™s spotlight: SDG 17 โ€“ PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS. Achieving the SDGs requires collective effort. SDG 17 emphasizes the importance of partnerships โ€” across sectors, borders, and communities โ€” to share knowledge, resources, and innovation for sustainable development.

At PLAY HANDBALL, partnerships are at the core of how we create impact. By working together, we build a network of impact that drives change through sports:

๐Ÿค Local and international partnerships: From schools and community organisations to global networks, we connect diverse partners who share our vision for inclusive development through sport.

๐Ÿ“˜ Co-creating educational tools: In collaboration with educators, environmentalists, and sports experts, weโ€™ve developed resources like PLAY FAIR for the ENVIRONMENT, combining sport with sustainability education.

๐Ÿ† Uniting for impactful events: Tournaments like the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup are only possible thanks to our partners. These events promote teamwork, mutual respect, and a shared sense of responsibility.

๐ŸŒ Supporting global exchange: Through programmes like weltwรคrts we foster intercultural learning and volunteer engagement that connects people and projects across borders.

We believe in the power of partnerships to amplify impact โ€” because together, we can achieve more for the communities and the planet we serve. ๐Ÿค๐ŸŒฟ

Who are your favourite collaborators in creating change? Tag them and share your stories with us! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿคพโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคพ Getting to Know Each Other โ€“ Visit from HVSH!

We were excited to welcome Silke Schumann from the Handball Association of Schleswig-Holstein to PLAY HANDBALL in South Africa! ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒ

Silke recently took on the role of HVSHโ€™s new correspondent for international relations, and this visit was a great opportunity for her to learn more about our work on the ground and explore how HVSH can further support PLAY HANDBALL in the future. ๐Ÿ‘

The partnership between HVSH and PLAY HANDBALL focuses on:
๐ŸŒ Strengthening international handball exchange
๐Ÿ’ก Supporting coach education and development
๐Ÿ“ฃ Raising awareness for handball and youth empowerment through sport

Last year, HVSH coach instructor Frank Hamann visited and led impactful training sessions for teachers in Cape Town and Johannesburg. This time, Silke met with Nicola and visited some of our handball-in-schools programs in Cape Town. ๐Ÿซโœจ

They had inspiring discussions on how to grow the cooperation and bring even more value to the children and communities we serve.

A special highlight: Silke brought a generous donation from THW Kiel! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ™Œ
Thank you, THW Kielโ€“ and Silke, for carrying the extra weight!

And thanks, HVSH, for building bridges through handball โ€“ from Schleswig-Holstein all the way to South Africa โ€“ and for helping to create new opportunities for young people, wherever they live. ๐ŸŒโค๏ธ

๐Ÿงณ Berlin Handball Legend Coaches in Tanzania! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿคพโ€โ™‚๏ธ

At 82 years old, Wolf Meyer-Hagen โ€“ Honorary President of the Handball Department at KSV AJAX Kรถpenick โ€“ travelled to Tanzania as a volunteer coach to support our partner Go4Goals.

๐Ÿ’ชโœจ His mission?
To share knowledge, spark passion, and break boundaries.
His tool? Handball.
His motto? โ€œAge is no limit!โ€

Together with PLAY HANDBALL and Go4Goals, Wolf brought not just drills and skills to the kids and teachers โ€“ but also heart and humour. โค๏ธ
Affectionately called "Babu"(Swahili for Grandpa), he quickly became a local legend. ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ” And the story continues โ€“ Wolf is set to return in June for the next handball exchange!
๐ŸŽ™ We caught up with him to hear more about his motivation and experience.

๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ† GOALS BEYOND THE GAME
Highlighting how PLAY HANDBALL supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in action.

โ™ป๏ธ๐Ÿ’š This weekโ€™s spotlight: SDG 13 โ€“ CLIMATE ACTION. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat its impacts โ€” through reducing emissions, protecting our natural resources, and educating on how to live more sustainably. ๐ŸŒฑ

At PLAY HANDBALL, we integrate climate action into our programs to inspire young people to care for the environment and lead the change:

โ™ป๏ธ Creative recycling projects: We show children how waste can be reused by creating Eco-Trophies from plastic bottles and medals from bottle caps โ€” proving that sustainability can be fun and impactful.

๐Ÿ“˜ PLAY FAIR for the ENVIRONMENT โ€“ our game-based learning series: This manual uses handball as a tool to teach environmental awareness and eco-friendly behaviours. In line with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), it builds knowledge, sparks curiosity, and motivates young players to take action.

๐Ÿค Promoting environmental responsibility: By integrating climate education into events like the PLAY HANDBALL Supercup, we empower kids to become ambassadors for sustainability in their schools and communities.

๐ŸŒฑ Leading by example: We reduce waste and use recycled materials at our events, demonstrating that everyday choices can make a difference.

๐ŸŒ Encouraging local climate action: Our workshops and activities spark conversations about protecting the environment and help children, teachers and coaches connect global issues with local solutions.

We believe sports can be a powerful tool to inspire climate action โ€” and show young people they have the power to protect the planet they play on. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿคพโ€โ™€๏ธ

How do you take climate action in your community? Share your ideas with us! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‘• Jersey donation from Germany brings joy to Nairobi ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ชโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช

Robin, 19 years old and from the Rheingau, is volunteering with PLAY HANDBALL in Kenya through the Weltwรคrts program. As a handball coach, he runs training sessions for children and young people in Utawala and Mathare, Nairobi.

One special highlight: jerseys donated by his former club TGE Eltville arrived in Kenya โ€“ personally delivered by player Fynn Gรคrtner. The young men in Mathare were so proud to wear them. For them, the jerseys mean more than just clothing โ€“ they give a feeling of identity, respect, and being part of something bigger.

Robin says: โ€œSeeing the smiles and team spirit these jerseys created was an unforgettable moment.โ€

๐Ÿ™ Thank you TGE Eltville for your support and for making a difference through sport!
