Play Handball for a Sustainable Future. A positive & peaceful future for & by the youth. We started as an South African based organisation in 2013.

Handball is our tool to empower the youth, teach life skills, promote education, and create opportunities for social growth for the individual & the community. Play Handball is a non-profit youth development organisation that focuses on the team sport of handball. vidual & the community. We want to contribute to a world in which young people have the competence & skills to shape a positive and peaceful future for themselves and others. In 2014, Play Handball established an office in Germany and has an affiliated office in Kenya since 2016. We work directly in the disadvantaged target communities through local cooperation. Handball is the tool to create learning experiences around valuable life skills and important socio-political topics such as environmental conservation, social cohesion, (gender) equity, inclusion, as well as health. We build capacity on grassroots level, and support our local partners with knowledge, equipment and volunteers. We give positive experiences & belonging ..... by facilitating handball afternoon programs at disadvantaged schools & communities.. by hosting the PlayHandball Super Cup, the first Handball & Education tournament against climate change

We support education & personal development ..... by developing educational programs for handball & life skills .. by facilitating training courses

We support sustainable sports structures & social growth ..... by building up sports structures in grassroots youth organisations.. by donating sports equipment to our partners

👕 Jersey donation from Germany brings joy to Nairobi 🇩🇪➡️🇰🇪

Robin, 19 years old and from the Rheingau, is volunteering with PLAY HANDBALL in Kenya through the Weltwärts program. As a handball coach, he runs training sessions for children and young people in Utawala and Mathare, Nairobi.

One special highlight: jerseys donated by his former club TGE Eltville arrived in Kenya – personally delivered by player Fynn Gärtner. The young men in Mathare were so proud to wear them. For them, the jerseys mean more than just clothing – they give a feeling of identity, respect, and being part of something bigger.

Robin says: “Seeing the smiles and team spirit these jerseys created was an unforgettable moment.”

💪✨ This week, we’re shining a spotlight on SDG 5 – GENDER EQUALITY, a goal that’s central to PLAY HANDBALL’s mission.

SDG 5 calls for an end to discrimination and for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere. It’s about breaking down barriers, creating equal opportunities, challenging stereotypes, and making sure no one is left behind — on or off the field. 🌍💖

We’ve partnered with Handball That Impact – a new NGO from Denmark founded by our friends Lene and Søren, who share our passion for handball and social impact. Together, we’re working to grow handball in Kenya and create even more opportunities for young people to play, learn, and thrive. 💪🏾🏐

This collaboration is rooted in shared values and the vision to build something sustainable – starting with our grassroots programs in Buruburu and Machakos and strengthened by our amazing local coaches, Brian and Newton, who are leading with energy and heart.

Play Handball Starts in Mathare! 🏐✨

We are excited to share that PLAY HANDBALL has started a new program in Mathare! 🎉 This week, our coach Newton and volunteer Jonas introduced handball in the community for the very first time. The response was amazing! Many kids and community members were happy about this new opportunity, as handball has never been played here before. 🤾‍♂️🤾‍♀️

From now on, our coaching team will be training at Mathare 4A Primary School every Tuesday – and possibly even daily during school holidays. 🏫🏐 We believe that sport can make a real difference, especially in places like Mathare.

Mathare is one of the largest and oldest slums in Nairobi, home to around 500,000 people. 🏘️ Life here is tough – many families struggle with poverty, and access to clean water 💧, healthcare 🏥, and education 📚 is very limited. Young people often face challenges such as crime, drug abuse, and unemployment.

Through handball, we want to create a positive space for children to learn, grow, and develop important life skills like teamwork 🤝, discipline 💪🏾, and confidence 🌟. More than just a game, handball can offer hope and new perspectives for the future. 🚀

📣 From the Court: Volunteer Stories
Today, Laurids shares his experience volunteering in Bo-Kaap, South Africa 🇿🇦.

Term 1 has wrapped up here in Bo-Kaap, and with Ramadan happening during the last month of March, things slowed down a little – but we still kept the handball spirit alive! 🙌 I continued running sessions at St. Paul’s and Schotschekloof Primary School. Even though training was a bit quieter, the kids showed up with tons of energy, motivation, and big smiles every time. 💪🏽🤾‍♂️

One highlight this term was definitely the visit from the Weltwärts conference group, also including our both supervisors Nicola from PLAY HANDBALL and Katharina from Kultur Life. Mathis and I got to lead a special training session, and the kids brought their A-game – lots of fun, laughter, and serious handball vibes! 🏐🔥

Experiencing Ramadan in Bo-Kaap has been something really special. There’s such a strong sense of community here. The big Iftar dinner with everyone organised by the Bo-Kaap Handball Club was a beautiful moment of togetherness. 🍲✨

Now that Ramadan has come to an end and Term 2 is kicking off, we’re all geared up to get back to full training mode. Can’t wait to hit the court again with full power! 🚀

Handball Tournament BuruBuru 🇰🇪

Last Saturday, we hosted an amazing handball tournament in Buruburu, organized by Ella and Cecilia! With five schools – Rockfield, DMI, St. Jude, Githunguri, and Kids Beyond Limit – plus a team from our Machakos centre, the courts were buzzing with excitement.

The energy was incredible as 49 girls and 57 boys competed with passion and teamwork! 🏆 Kids Beyond Limit girls and boys took the championship titles in both categories, while DMI girls and Rockfield boys secured runners-up. Every team walked away with medals, but the real prize was the joy, memories, and friendships made!

A massive shoutout to our amazing team – Ella, Cecilia, Victor, Brian, and Carol – for making this tournament a success! 🙏 Also, a big thank you to the 15 local volunteers, who made the day run smoothly.

We were also honored by a visit from the Ministry of Education, who praised the event for keeping kids engaged and active, aligning with Kenya’s new curriculum. Seeing these young athletes grow through sports is exactly why we do what we do! 💪✨

📢 Welcome to the Team, Brian & Newton!

We’re excited to officially welcome Brian Kithinji and Newton Murimi to our PLAY HANDBALL Kenya (PHKE) family! 🏐🇰🇪
As young community coaches, Brian in Buruburu and Newton in Machakos, they’re at the forefront of growing handball, mentoring young players, and building stronger communities through sport. 💪🧡💚From training kids and organizing tournaments to promoting life skills and inclusivity.

Their work is part of our newly formed partnership with Handball That Impact (HTI) from Denmark – together, we’re empowering youth, promoting life skills, and making handball accessible to everyone. 🙌
