Emerging bleary-eyed from weeks of frenzied creativity to make the dream of our first Mountain Getaways Magazine a reality, we finally have time to catch our breath and reflect on this incredible journey we have embarked on. We fell in love with Limpopo long ago and, over the years, have explored the hidden places of the province only to constantly return to magical Magoebaskloof.

The Mountain is a space which attracts creatives, adventurers, conservationists, dreamers and doers, so we are grateful to have the opportunity to be a voice for this unique community.

We are lucky enough to have lovers of Limpopo in our midst - passionate individuals like Bridget Hilton-Barber, Bronwyn Egan, Marloe Scott Wilson and Thabiso Sekhula, who remind us once again how privileged we are to live in where there are mountains instead of malls, spectacular views rather than parkades and silence to replace the sounds of the city. But the more we listen to people like Toban Kahn McMahon, Sandi Leigh Moore or Elmarie Whelan and share in their stories, the easier it is to celebrate the threads that connect us all.

And of course, none of this would be possible without the legacy left by Mara Wakefield, who has collected together and told the stories of this area for the past 15 years. Her passion for the people and places of Magoebaskloof has never waned even as she and Fred hitched up their home and hit the road to explore the world. In December this year, we will celebrate the 50th edition of the Mountain Getaways Magazine - the perfect opportunity to look back on all the inspiring people who have been part of this ever-unfolding story.

Keep your eyes peeled for the latest edition and grab a copy to get the scoop of what's hot on the mountain this autumn. We look forward to the journey ahead and the tales still to be told.

With Love, Lisa & Deon

Visit www.mountaingetaways.co.za to view an online version of the magazine or sign up and be the first to know when we launch our new website!

the countdown for Haenertsburg Food and Wine Festival has begun! ONLY 10 DAYS LEFT 🎉🎉

19/03/2022

The real flavour of a place comes through in the unique food experiences you have... with produce that is organic and home grown with love. With the ‘Farm to Fork’ and ‘Eat Local’ movements gaining momentum around the world, travellers like to know more about where their food comes from and how to support local producers.

In Magoebaskloof, the unique local flavours are of the Wegraakbosch Organic Farm and Dairy slow-food accredited cheeses, chorizo and organic veggies... or the ‘Best Beer in the Country 2021’, a white Pale Ale with wonderful lemongrass hints from the inspiring young brewmaster at Zwakala Brewery, It’s in the cordials from Kuhestan Organic Farm, the sweet-treats at Ma Griets Fine Foods; the handmade duck paté and pesto by Bittersweet or the blueberries you can pick straight from the bushes in season at Blueberry Heights and pop into your Rhino Beetle Gin or on a generous helping of ice cream ‘scooped from Limpopo’ at the Dando Creamery

If the driving came to an end when you reached your forest-mountain hideaway, you can always stop in at Stella's Farm Deli, a warm and welcoming place with a large variety of the best cuts of meat and necessities for your weekend braai. Apart from the tastiest local treats like jam, pesto, paté, rusks and biscuits, they also stock the best geelvet biltong. You should make some time for a coffee stop and all-day breakfast at Stella’s or pop next door for pancakes and waffles at the The Pancake House. Over the weekend, stop in at the Cheese Stall and sample the most divine organic cheeses and chorizo to buy for your picnic.

Whether you are in Magoebaskloof and surrounds for the Magoebas Ultra Trail Forest Marathon, the Ebenezer Mile or the Munnik Meerkat Mountainbike Challenge, the area has something for everyone.

19/03/2022

This weekend is perfect timing to discover all that Magoebaskloof has to offer. Whether you are running through the Woodbush for the Magoebas Ultra Trail Forest Marathon, swimming the Ebenezer Mile or participating in the Munnik Meerkat Mountainbike challenge, you will find a great vibe and welcoming faces wherever you go.

Head to the heart of Haenertsburg for excellent pub grub like ribs, traditional chicken pie or the famous Haenertsburger at the The Iron Crown Pub & Bistro. Choose for Italian Fare at Caffe' Villa Trattoria or a coffee and sweet treat at Coffee shop at the The Pennefather & Memory Hold-The-Door Accommodation,Gift & Book Shop complex.

Get a taste of the high street in Hanertsburg at the Red Plate, a friendly, vibey restaurant. Enjoy their scrumptious meals outside on the deck or inside next to the cosy fireplace if it turns into a misty day.

The Chicken Schnitzel and Grilled Trout are firm favourites or try the Beed Fillet with jalepeno & cheese sauce. Before you go, grab some more-ish brownies for the road.

Or if you prefer to wander far away from the crowds, head up to the top of one of the many mountain peaks for soaring views and a champagne picnic for two with delicious deli treats and fresh bread from the The Eatery on Rissik.

Of course, it is obligatory to have tea and scones on the patio of the Magoebaskloof Hotel, gazing out over the lush green valley below.

Whatever it is you choose to do, you will be enchanted by the spectacular scenery, delicious farm fare, larger-than-life locals and a fabulous vibe over the long weekend.

Come closer and Love Limpopo 💓

Handré Hay, organiser of the Magoebas Ultra Trail chose Magoebaskloof as the site for the Forest Marathon to be held on 20 March 2022 because, as he says, ‘You really get pulled into a different world. All your senses come alive. You see beauty in every detail around you, you see and hear the crystal clear streams and even taste the magical waters that flow in it.’

‘You hear the call of rare forest birds like the Narina Trogon, you smell the wet ground and mud, you feel and touch the ancient trees that line the route. You become immersed in a magical world and become part of the living organism that is the Magoebas Forests.’

And the supporters of the Marathon participants can experience this magic too by booking a guided bird and nature walk. Surrounded by towering trees, there is a stillness in the forest broken only by the melodious birdsong. Through the faint whispering wind through the leaves, the air fills with the warbling, trilling, hooting, whistling and croaking sounds of the early forest risers as they greet the first light of day with a full heart.

‘Quick, look over there.... between the mossy vine and the golden patch of light... a Narina Trogon, a male, with its red breast turned towards us.... Do you see it? What a sighting!’

The excitement is palpable as the birds you have always wanted to see... Black-fronted Bush-Shrike in an open patch of the canopy, a pair of gregarious Cape Parrots calling from the top of a Yellowwood tree or the flash of a White-starred Robin. But what makes the experience even more incredible is the expertise and the passion of the exceptional Bird Guides who find those elusive 'specials' you have been chasing for years.

Even if you are not chasing 'lifers', Limpopo's top local Bird Guides, David Letsoalo and Paul Nkhumane make a forest walk more like an adventure of discovery, pointing out butterflies and Samango monkeys, looking at mushrooms and forest flowers or following the spoor of a dainty Bushbuck which bounds away into the forest when disturbed. So whether you are a twitcher or a beginner, experience the magic of guided bird and nature walk with David or Paul in the Woodbush Forest.

Connect with David Letsoalo on 083 568 4678 or Paul Nkhumane on 084 354 9710 to book a guided birding outing or take a look at www.limpopobirding.com for more information.

If you are in the Magoebaskloof area for the Magoebas Ultra Trail Forest Marathon, Ebenezer Mile or Munnik Meerkat Mountainbike Challenge with family or friends, you should make your way to the Cheese stall near The Pancake House or book a tour at Wegraakbosch Organic Farm and Dairy, a family-owned and run farm in the heart of Magoebaskloof. Here cows, geese, pigs and chickens live out their best life in harmony with the land and the seasons.

Michi and Raymond passionately believe that happy animals mean healthy people and this applies to the grass-fed cows who produce the delicious range of cheeses and the free-range chickens but also the micro-organisms in the soil which feeds the flourishing organic veggie garden.

Wegraakbosch Dairy still uses the 800 year-old processes and a copper cauldron warmed by a wood-burning fire to make the cheeses and you can try their peppadew, cumin and garlic soft cheeses or the more mature Mutchli and Lesedi at the Cheese Stall or book for the 10.00 dairy tour and pre-order a cheese platter with olives, fresh veggies and selection of their cheeses.

The slow-food movement supports local small-scale farmers who give back as much as they use, nurturing their environment and producing food that’s good for us to consume. So let’s buy local and ‘eat lekker’ and support a positive cycle of growth on our planet.

Book for the dairy tour or a platter on 0723610664 or 0723701886.
