Today is World Tourism Day. Let's not forget its definition: World Tourism Day encourages people to explore and honour diverse cultures across the globe, and enjoy the beauty of world's nature. It is a gentle reminder for people to understand the significant role of tourism in the development of global economy, cooperation, peace, and understanding.

Today on World Leopard day, we honour the truly majestic leopard. They are the ultimate stealth predators, known for their agility and strength. They are said to be able to climb as high as 50 feet (15 meters) up a tree while holding a fresh kill in its mouth, even one larger and heavier than themselves! They stash food up high so other predators such as lions or hyenas can't get it.

Two weeks ago I managed a long overdue visit to the Timbavati Game Reserve. Our first stop was Shindzela Tented Camp, where we were pleasantly surprised by some great animal and bird sightings. Next stop was Umlani Bushcamp. This lodge, with its homely feel, offers peaceful ambiance and great food. My last visit was Kapama Private Game Reserve. What a treat! Thanks to all the lodges for hosting us.

Did you know?

Bogenfels

Bogenfels means rock arch in German, a name originating from the colonization of Namibia by the Germans back in the day. The arch is pretty large at around a width of 80m and soars to a height of about 60m. The geology of the area is composed of a mixture of hard dolomite and soft shale and the arch was probably formed when the whole area was under water, though I may be wrong. The arch lies about 100kms south of Luderitz and lies in the restricted diamond mining area and one needs a permit to be here….

I love Swakopmund
02/08/2021

I love Swakopmund

This settlement at the mouth of the Swakop river looks pretty civilised nowadays.
To imagine that 130 years ago there was nothing here, along a vast, barren stretch of desert coast. But the wide fields of sand dunes ended here, and one could dig one or two feet deep into the sandy river bed of the Swakop, and find a little brackish water. These two factors would make ox wagon transport into the interior possible, and thus formed the raison d'etre, the very foundation for establishing "Swakopmund" as harbour town.

However, the last ship to reach these shores lifted anchor well over a hundred years ago, when all harbour activities were moved twenty miles south, into Walvis Bay, the former British enclave.
Nonetheless, and despite what often seemed as 'insurmountable hardship', Swakopmund had continued to grow and to develop in leaps and bounds, and has provided many splendid opportunities for generations of people from very diverse cultural backgrounds.
Swakopmunders have looked well after their unique heritage, and with its special quaint charm, the town has grown into the hearts of countless people all over the globe.

For well over a hundred years, Swakopmunders have faced, and mastered, a multitude of challenges. There had been many boom times, and there had been as many recessions before ..... People have always come out of a crisis stronger.

The iconic lighthouse holds a special symbolic significance for Swakopmund and its people.

Which trait of our town and our people do you appreciate the most?
