Please sign this petition, which is being supported by our Partner Raggy Charters - Marine-Eco Cruises, to prevent ship-to-ship fuel bunkering in the Algoa Bay Whale Heritage Site: https://www.change.org/p/samsa-samsamaritime-and-department-of-transport-dotransport-mbalulafikile-we-call-on-you-to-prevent-further-ship-to-ship-fuel-bunkering-in-algoa-bay

Algoa Bay, South Africa, is an area of outstanding marine biodiversity, home to hundreds of bottlenose and an important nursery site for humpback and southern right .

Further transfer of fuel through this area will increase the risk of oil spills, ship strikes, and marine noise pollution, which would be disastrous for wildlife.

Please add your signature to call for the moratorium on new bunkering licenses to be kept in place, so that this wonderful can be protected!

Our deepest condolences to her family, Riette Bennett St Lucia was an incredible woman in our industry & will be sadly missed.
May she rest in peace.

We are saddened to learn that Riette Bennett of Advantage Tours, St Lucia in South Africa suddenly passed away this week.
Riette and her husband Danie were one of the early pioneers of boat-based whale watching in SA. Located in St Lucia since 1991, their exemplary whale watching tours extended to Richard’s Bay and Durban.
Riette’s warmth, compassion, and generosity is fondly remembered by WCA partners & participants of the World Whale Conference held in Durban in 2017.
Riette was a much-loved member of the local community and our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and staff.

Super exciting stuff for our Southern African Humpback Migration Route 🐋

The 2021 sardine run has officially started with the first netting’s down the South Coast this morning - there have been lots of reports of massive shoals along the Eastern Cape!

We have our fingers crossed that we get to properly experience this phenomenon over the next few weeks in 2021 🐟

📣 We are very excited to announce a new Candidate Whale heritage Site, Ombai-Wetar Strait in Timor-Leste - the first one in Asia! 📣

The waters surrounding Timor-Leste and Atauro island are incredibly biodiverse! Here, you can see resident species such as the Melon-headed whale and Short-finned pilot whale, as well as False killer whales, Pygmy blue whales, S***m whales, and many others.

Communities and stakeholders are already playing a big part in developing sustainable tourism opportunities and addressing the challenges threatening the island. There is an established Marine Protected Area protecting the site and Atauro has been recognised as an important area for marine and terrestrial biodiversity by the Government of Timor-Leste. Also, the commitment to bring you the best standards of sustainable tourism and protecting its environment are evident through the ‘’Strategic Development Plan’’ and the ‘ Atauro Island Sustainable Tourism Strategy’’. By 2030, this community aims to:
🐋 Be a pristine protected area and world famous ecotourism destination
🌍 Have low impact development
♻️ Operate on renewable energy
🐠 Establish healthy reef populations
✨ Welcome a limited number of respectful visitors by a vibrant community that together celebrate the marine environment through its authentic culture, festivals, and museums.

The community of Timor-Leste and Atauro island is taking a further step to improve protection of their unique marine environment by becoming a Candidate Whale Heritage Site.
