Warwick Junction lies on the edge of the Durban's inner-city and is the primary public transport interchange in the city. On an average day the area accommodates 460 000 commuters, and at least 6000 street vendors. Given the confluence of rail, taxi and bus transport, this area has always been a natural market for street vendors. The Markets of Warwick includes between 5000 and 8000 vendors tradin

g in 9 distinct markets. Currently this is the only informally structured market in a public space of this magnitude, and thus establishes itself as the single most authentic African market that South Africa has to offer. The products available vary from bead work, traditional arts and crafts, traditional cuisine, fresh produce, music and entertainment merchandise, clothing, accessories and traditional medicine. Join us for a walking tour through a unique interactive cultural market!

Run by a local NGO, Asiye Asiye Etafuleni, Markets of Warwick is a community tourism initiative that aims to bring a wider awareness to the informal economy in Durban. Over 10000 students, members of the public and tourists have been through the area since the tour's inception in 2010. This year, around 500 school pupils from a wide range of Durban schools have visited.

The money generated by these tours goes towards paying the tour guides, who are informal workers themselves, and contributing towards the Traders Against Crime community volunteers that also accompany the students on tours.

Please feel free to contact us on 031-3093880 should you wish to make an enquiry, or email us on [email protected] to book.

We hope to see you soon!

Just as women are the heartbeat of a culture, the ancient skill of the Zulu heritage / nation Beadwork has long been an important means of communication, each bead or combination telling a story whether it be a love letter, symbolic, spiritual or purely for adornment the intricate craft demands a very high level of skill. Despite the ever evolving world we live in, Beadwork has retained its relevance and has also become a highly sought after tourist acquisition. This craft is being kept alive by about 300 traders in Warwick Junction from surrounding areas who spend their time designing and beading the most beautiful items. To experience this beautiful artwork and Bead market book a Friday tour through the Markets of Warwick. Email [email protected]
