Things to do on the East:
Bras d’Eau National Park:
This is one of three national parks. Over 497 hectares, it is rich with endemic trees and plants. Its mountain-bike trail winds its way through the forest before following an old railway line to the lava tubes and the ruins of an old sugar factory dating back to the 18th century. There are trails and a special Milky Way observatory in the forest where the galaxy can be admired.
Lion Mountain:
Various routes are available to climb up Lion Mountain and experience some of the best views of Mahébourg Bay. There are 102 steps up what is called the 'hind leg' of the mountain. The hike takes about two hours.
Roches Noires ‘Caves’/Lava Tubes:
Near the Roches Noires area are many interconnected lava tubes that appear on the surface as caves or freshwater springs. Visitors can walk from Roches Noires or Rivière du Rempart and discover the remains of the volcanic activity that formed the island of Mauritius. The lava tubes connect to the sea along the coast and provide freshwater swimming, unique plants and clear water teeming with fish.
Île aux Cerfs:
This is a privately owned island just off the east coast. It is famous for its white beaches, turquoise lagoons and the wide range of restaurants, water sports and land activities. It's home to the Île aux Cerfs Golf Club, an 18-hole championship course.
Le Café des Arts:
Le Café des Arts in Trou d'Eau Douce focuses on art, culture and gastronomic cuisine. Owner, Jocelyn Gonzalez’s mother was the painter, Yvette Maniglier, who is said to have been Matisse’s last student. Maniglier’s artwork adorns the walls of the old sugar mill, which is now the restaurant.
