CONSERVATION SOCIETY

On Thursday the 5th of May, the Conservation society welcomed old boy Chris Pearson (Baines, 1992) back to the school, to share with us his knowledge on conservation-related matters gained from his experiences in the industry.

Chris runs a conservation-focused tourism business, called WildCon, which is a social enterprise committed to funding flagship wildlife species conservation, and research, by combining it with unique corporate and private group hospitality getaways in game reserves and oceans throughout Southern Africa. He also has a camera trap business and generously donated two devices to the school for use on the reserve.

He enthralled the boys with his presentation and challenged the boys to partner with him in raising funds for a special black rhino de-horning project which members of the society will be participating in during the June holidays at Nambiti private game reserve.

Wow...

Wow...

If you recognise this, you'll know the excitement on this safari right now!

Finding this incredible endangered pangolin on our morning game drive not far from the Silale Swamp was the perfect start to the 'P' morning. We also had parrots, pelicans (flock of 200), a parisoma, pigs (warthogs), a praying mantis, Proboscideans (eles) all whilst enjoying Petit dejeuner (thanks ) in the bush! Thanks to the team for helping to compile the P list.

Such a sad, sudden and tragic loss and our sincerest condolences to the families.

STATEMENT FROM CHENGETA WILDLIFE:

RORY YOUNG, CO-FOUNDER & CEO, CHENGETA WILDLIFE

It is with deepest sorrow and regret that Chengeta Wildlife confirms the death of Rory Young, our co-founder and CEO.

Rory was leading a wildlife protection patrol in Arly National Park, Burkina Faso on 26th April 2021 when they were attacked by terrorists which resulted in his death and that of two Spanish journalists who were capturing his efforts to protect precious wildlife.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased right now. We respectfully request your patience, time and understanding as we deal with the loss of our inspirational leader.

FOREST ELEPHANTS – NOW CRITICALLY ENDANGERED

For the first time, following the emergence of new genetic evidence, the IUCN have now separated the African Elephant into two species on the Red List of Threatened Species, listing the African savanna elephant as Endangered and the African forest elephant as Critically Endangered.

They were previously grouped together as one species and listed as Vulnerable but following population declines over several decades due to poaching for ivory and loss of habitat, they have been re-classified and their futures look challenging.

The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years according to the assessments.

Our founder, Rory Young, says, “Chengeta Wildlife works primarily in Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo and is currently expanding into other countries in the Congo Basin where we are providing crucial support for forest elephant conservation.”

One of our projects is collaborating directly with communities in the Central African Republic to protect wildlife including the forest elephant so this latest news is alarming. Our Community Program there is key to empowering and motivating the locals to protect these forest elephants in the Dzanga Sangha Protected Area.

More to follow on how you can support this vital program in the coming weeks when we launch our brand-new community-focused campaign.
