Ring barking in action.
Elephant ring bark trees to get to the cambium layer between the trunk and bark. The cambium are high in nutrition and also loved by elephants as it is also soft to chew on.
In this case this elephant is busy with an iconic tree found in Africa known as the Marula.
Elephants target Marula trees mostly if the tree is found in their region, but also target several other tree species for this reason. Marula trees bark are easy to penetrate and to tuck right into business.
One interesting fact about Marula trees is that they’re one of few species of trees that can regenerate and grow back their bark where it got injured. Unfortunately if a tree gets ring barked completely, it will cause the tree to die as the circular supply to transport food for the tree are cut off and won’t be able to stay alive.

The Spotted Hyena is the largest species of hyenas, the live in groups called clans where a female is the alpha.
Baby Hyenas are called cubs and are born solid black. They start to get there spots when a few weeks old.

Typically, outside of the breeding season, these birds are exploring their territories on a daily basis, but as this time of year approaches, they start to get their nesting sights ready.
