SOUND A BIT PECULIAR?
"Slaphakskeentjies"......
The direct translation for Slaphakskeentjies is "small floppy heels". These delicious small pickled onions, in their tangy, piquant sauce, can be served with a variety of meat-based main dishes and are perfect for braais! This is an old fashioned traditional South African favourite! Taste the Karoo!
_
One explanation for this peculiar name is from the original Dutch where “slap hakke” means without energy or s***k, refering to the onions being boiled until they are soft and without some of their original sharpness.

The beautiful village of Nieu-Bethesda is included in our tour!
A variety of make belief statues adorns The Owl House, home of the late local artist and resident Helen Martins. Using cement and glass, her craftsmanship and creative expression illuminated her seemingly unfortunate circumstances. Today referred to as “The Camel Yard”, a number of owls, people and camels stand tall in her back yard, as she drew inspiration from Biblical Christian text, the poetry of Omar Khayyam and various works by William Blake.
