AIR NAM RESTORES FLIGHTS TO RUNDU, KATIMA MULILO

Air Namibia has decided to restore its flights between Windhoek and Rundu, as well as between Windhoek and Katima Mulilo. The new flights will operate from Eros airport instead of Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Air Namibia took a decision to change the landing terminal in March, a move met with disdain from many passengers, particularly business travellers. Many passengers had complained it would be more costly and was likely to inconvenience them to land and board flights at Hosea Kutako.

Air Namibia seems to have succumbed to public pressure and recently ran a weeklong notice of schedule changes for flights to Katima Mulilo, Rundu and Ondangwa. Air Namibia had earlier clarified that their decision to re-route flights to Hosea Kutako was necessitated by traffic growth, as well as to minimise costs.

WINDHOEK EYES HIKING TRAILS

Hiking trails have been identified as one of new niche tourism markets aimed at enhancing values of farms around the Namibian capital Windhoek that offer unique landscapes.

New hiking trails are being promoted by the Namplace project, which is mandated to advocate and educate the public about landscape conservation in the identified pilot landscape conservation areas such as Sossusvlei Namib, Fish River Canyon, Waterberg, Mudumu and the Windhoek Green Belt.

Farm Godeis, situated approximately 70 kilometres west of Windhoek, is one of the farms where the hiking trail intervention has been implemented. The Namplace project has developed a Khomas-Hochland hiking trail in Windhoek's green belt landscape, which is a pilot study of the Namplace project stretching 100 kilometres along five farms.

Farm Onduno, Otjiseva, Monte Cristo and Daan Viljoen are among the Windhoek farms included in the green belt.

EASTER: WINDHOEK POLICE CAUTIONS TRAVELLERS

The Windhoek City Police will join forces with the police to enforce a zero tolerance approach on lawlessness during the Easter weekend.

Speaking at a media briefing in the capital on Wednesday, City Police traffic unit head, Adam Eiseb said the City Police will have a special operation, which will involve setting up mini roadblocks in all residential and business areas across the city from 4 April to 7 April 2015.

"All vehicle users with a warrant of arrest are encouraged to settle their warrant of arrest before the long weekend," he stressed.

Eiseb added that besides the roadblocks, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems will be set in place. The database on the system enables the access of any outstanding fines or warrants of arrest linked to the vehicle or driver's identity number.

He also stated that any vehicle lights that do not comply with specifications laid down in the Road Traffic and Transport Regulations, as well as motorists with illegal, false and obscure number plates will be dealt with decisively in line with zero tolerance.

FLYAFRICA FLIGHTS ON ICE OVER APPROVAL

Flyafrica’s inaugural Johannesburg-Windhoek and Cape Town-Windhoek flights may have to be postponed, as the airline is still awaiting the Civil Aviation Authority’s final approval to operate on the routes. The inaugural flights were planned for March 2 and March 16 respectively.

Adrian Hamilton-Manns, Flyafrica CEO, told Tourism Update that the airline had been advised on February 21 that the CAA wanted to inspect the airline’s operation. “It is their right to inspect at any time, but they are not able to inspect until late next week. We are still in negotiations about the timeline so we are still not sure – it is a very fluid situation and we are working to fix it as best we can.”

The airline posted on social media: “We assume it was caused by all the crying and complaining by certain competitors afraid of the low fare revolution.”

Flyafrica competes on these routes with both Air Namibia and SAA. If the inaugural flights are delayed, passengers can opt for a full refund or they can re-book their flight for a later date. The airline will give vouchers to affected passengers.

WINDHOEK AIRPORT UPS SAFETY AFTER DOWNGRADE DRAMA

After last years’ drama that saw Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport downgraded by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO), the airport is on the path of making things right: two of 11 new state-of-the-art Merce Rhino fire fighting vehicles were officially introduced at the airport.

The 11 new vehicles cost in excess of R98-million in total and sees Hosea Kutako Airport, a Category 9 airport, exceed the requirements of the ICAO safety standards. In July 2014 the airport was affected for just over a week after being downgraded to a Category 5 airport. This affected the operations of all large aircraft to Hosea Kutako International, since these require specific safety and emergency firefighting equipment.

Hosea Kutako International is required as per the ICAO standard to have 24 800 litres of water, 9 000 litres per minute discharge rate of foam solution and 450kg of Dry Chemical Powder. Hosea Kutako International now exceeds the ICAO requirements as follows: a total of 43 700 litres of water, 5 250 litres of foam and 23 000 litres of water per minute discharge rate.

In addition to this, the National Airports Company is in the process of completing additional rehabilitation and upgrade programs at eight of its airports to improve the level of compliance and meet capacity requirements. The NAC expects to complete a R95 million construction project at Walvis Bay Airport to turn the airport into a fully-fledged international airport.

Currently the airport terminal and the runway are under construction and due for completion in the second quarter of 2015. Apron refurbishment will start in the first quarter of 2015. Additional rehabilitation programs underway at NAC airports include:
- Ondangwa Airport will open its new R84 million terminal building in the first quarter of 2015 and is undergoing a runway rehabilitation of R208 million
- A new fire station will be opened at the Eros airport in the second quarter of 2015.
- Airports in Luderitz, Rundu, Katima Mulilo and Keetmanshoop are being remodeled from military airports to convert them into civilian airports.

FACELIFT FOR NAMIBIAN EVENT SITE

The popular Namibian event site whatsonwindhoek.com has undergone an extensive upgrade. The new website was launched last week and is a platform for local initiatives to promote their events and facilities.

With the new WhatsON website, new owner Delia Magg-Thesenvitz and her team have created a platform not only for the people in Namibia but also for people visiting our country. Besides the safari tourist, there are numerous people coming for business, conferences and sport events like the upcoming Junior Squash World Championships. These people want to know what they can do while in Windhoek and the new WhatsOn website can give them guidance by marketing local initiatives to them.

The new website does not only cater for events but also for permanent facilities like sport clubs, museums, recreation areas, playgrounds, sundowner spots, etc. to be listed.

To list an event or facility one can just go to the website and click “Submit new event”. Unlike Facebook where information is immediately visible the information submitted to WhatsOn has to be published by the WhatsOn team to appear on the website.

As the new website also wants to list happenings outside of Windhoek, it is also accessible at www.whatsonnamibia.com. Further new features are filter and sorting functions, the integration with the page, the responsive design, and that people can save a date directly to their Outlook calendar.
