A warm South African welcome to the Mzansi Tour. Mzansi is the Zulu word meaning ‘the South’ and is often used as a colloquialism to refer to South Africa. It’s appropriate then as the name for the Mzansi Tour, the only UCI-graded road cycling stage race in South Africa. There has been road racing in South Africa for over 120 years. In fact the 1893 road race world champion, Lourens Meintjes, was
a South African, as was Randolph Lewis, the road race gold medallist at the 1912 Olympic Games. Due to South Africa’s relatively remote geographic location, however, it never developed road racing at the same pace as Europe and the USA. There has been professional road racing in South Africa since the early 1970s, but only a handful of international races, aggravated by the former government’s apartheid policies, which led to a two-decade sporting boycott on South Africa. The two most well known international road stage races in South Africa in recent times are the Rapport Toer (1973–2000) and the Giro del Capo 1992–2011. Both helped establish local tours in which the top South Africans could compete against international competition. The Mzansi Tour will be the first international South Africa road stage race to take place in professional cycling’s ‘new era’. Anti-doping control will be a high priority at the tour as our mission is to create a truly fair contest to showcase the strongest riders and smartest teams; an event at which the next generation of young riders – South African and international – and sponsors and fans, can feel reassured.
