“To understand the South Africa of today, you have to understand the South Africa of the past.”

I believe it was Simon Blackburn, owner of Three Tree Hill Lodge who said this, and it has always resonated deeply with us.

Three Tree Hill Lodge is a firm favourite of ours for many, many reasons – it’s setting amidst the rolling hills of KwaZulu Natal against the dramatic backdrop of the Drakensberg and facing Spioenkop Hill; the relaxed, open-armed hospitality; glorious farm-style country food that stays abreast of changes (they are now also officially vegan certified!), how much there is to see and do on site and within easy reach; their deep love for Africa’s people, history, culture and wildlife – the list goes on. It’s a wonderful place to simply “be”.

But, back to the history – Three Tree Hill Lodge specialises in the history of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902), also known as the South African War, when one of the smallest countries in the world declared war on the world’s greatest empires of the time resulting in the longest, costliest, bloodiest and the most humiliating war that Britain fought in between 1815 and 1914.

The lodge’s focal point is the Battle of Spioenkop with insightful, holistic and evocative tours.

January 2025 heralds the 125 since the Battle of Spioenkop and the lodge is offering a commemorative package from 22 - 25 January.

Combine immersive historical experiences with the beauty of the northern Drakensberg, a wreath-laying ceremony on the 24th and tea with His Worship the Mayor of Okhahlamba on the summit of Spioenkop.

For more details - https://www.threetreehill.co.za/offers/commemorative-battlefield-package/

For those who cannot be there but are intrigued by the history, you can relive the story through – "The Spioenkop Campaign", by Robert Davidson, which Simon feels is the best book ever written about Spioenkop.

Further details on the book - https://www.threetreehill.co.za/offers/spioenkop-campaign-book/

29/08/2024

Remember the distressing story in 2023 about John Hume, his Platinum Rhino Project and about 2000 captive southern white rhino that were facing a very uncertain future due to funds running out to maintain this massive operation?

First, he could raise no funding from donors or attract partners, then there was the likelihood of auctioning the animals, with the worrying possibility of an even more uncertain future for them. People all over the world weighed in on this, but by the end of August 2023, things were looking very bleak. Not one interested party.

Enter African Parks, quite literally, at the 11th hour.

On 4th September the world renown, and quite extraordinary, non-profit conservation organisation moved to purchase the entire operation with the plan to rewild all 2000 animals according to a framework developed by independent experts - with the intention of translocating about 300 rhinos every year.

This first 40 rhinos, went to their new home in May 2024.

Click here to read a little from African Parks -
https://www.africanparks.org/campaign/rewilding-2000-rhino

Simon Epsley, CEO of Africa Geographic attended the pioneer stage of this visionary project. We quote:

“It’s time to give you a rare glimpse behind the scenes of African Parks' outrageously audacious plan to rewild 2,000 farmed white rhinos.

It’s no secret that their plan is well underway and that several hundred of these chubby unicorns are now thriving in the bushveld. Press releases by African Parks have provided the details, but no one that I know of has provided a personal account of the capture and release process. Until now.

My story below describes an incredible journey I took a few months back. Amongst other contextual information, I also explore why southern white rhino populations dropped below 100 in the first place. Spoiler alert: it was not due to poaching to supply rhino horn to the Far East markets”

Below is the link to Simon's story (27 August).

06/08/2024

If you are an adventurous, fit , possibly a little bit mad, adrenaline ju**ie and wildlife enthusiast who has always dreamed of trail-riding in Botswana? To boldly go where few men, or women (!) have gone before – to cycle on old migration and elephant paths deep into some of the most pristine places on earth?

Then this adventure is perfect for you.

Several years of planning, blood, sweat and yes, gears have gone into crafting these cycle-tours and hundreds, maybe thousands, of kilometres have been cycled (and bikes carried!) through savannah grasslands, baobab forests, Okavango floodplains and waterways mapping ancient elephant paths, and finding new routes, to create unparalleled biking safaris to the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi and the Okavango Delta.

With expert teams of professional cycling safari guides, back-up vehicles, mechanical support crew and stays at a mix of luxury lodges and fully serviced mobile camps along the way, each cycle safari is a guaranteed “ride on the wild side”.

There are lodge to lodge, camping or combo safaris and the safaris can easily be tailored to suit you. We can certainly arrange for non-cycling friends and family to join you for part of the way, depending on the route that you choose to do.

Currently 4 and 6 night trips are available to both areas. Rates are on request, also according to the type of trip and are on a sliding scale starting from 2 riders.

Without doubt, the best way to do this is to get together a group of 6 cycling friends and take a private trip. This will give you great flexibility and will be so much fun!

There are many questions to be answered regarding logistics and details, and we will gladly answer them.

But for now - Imagine, just imagine……….

Take your next safari with real-life film-stars! Same location, same film-stars, simply going about their everyday lives.

It’s not quite Maverick, but you’ll be among true heroes - the kings of sleuth, camouflage and power, who only fight when necessary, will kill for a cause or lay down their lives for their families.

Travel with us to Mokolwane – a little jewel in one of the largest private concessions in the Okavango Delta, accessed only by helicopter, teeming wildlife and home to the third-highest density of leopard recorded in Africa.

There is so much action in this area that NatGeo and Netflix filmmaker Brad Bestelink has chosen to base himself there.

Catch “Living with Leopards” on Netflix from 10 May
(link to preview - https://youtu.be/c2pzKahGGtA )
And the next season of “Big Cat Diaries” on BBC airing in September, all filmed by Brad in the Mokolwane area.

And then GO! …. with African Sojourns to live among those stars, and under a billion more, on one of two specials –

3 night stay – with a complimentary inbound helicopter flight from Maun or anywhere in the Delta or Linyanti area.

OR

Stay 6/pay 4 in a combination of Mokolwane and either Hyena Pan or Meno a Kwena to expand on the experience. (excl. 01 July – 31 August).

Are you ever nostalgic for the halcyon days of the African safari? That golden era when travel was slow, wild and raw, when your pre-dawn coffee bubbled gently over a wood fire and you somehow felt safe and cradled but with all your senses dancing to the rhythm of Africa – SO exquisitely alive you could burst?

The world is changing, as are personal requirements and there is a need and a place for luxury safaris, Wi-Fi, A/con and Nespresso machines.

But if you want to step back into the Africa of yore, granted, with some mod-cons (!), there are little gems out there that will feel like coming home.

We know, and love, many such wonderful camps in equally wonderful parts of Africa.
Why not get in touch on [email protected]

Here is Shinde Footsteps a gorgeous little camp and one of those gems.

Timeless, charming, intimate (6 guests).
