Working remotely from New Zealand

New visa conditions will now allow visitors to work remotely for an overseas employer or client. The change applies to applications received from 27 January 2025 for all visitors, including tourists and people visiting family, and partners and guardians on longer-term visitor visas.

These new conditions mean that tourists can stay in New Zealand as a digital nomad and keep in touch with work back home, without breaching their visa conditions.

Both visitor visa recipients and people who enter with an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) will receive these conditions.

Visitor visa holders must not:

work for a New Zealand employer
provide goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand
do work that requires them to be physically present at a workplace in New Zealand.

Learn how to spot fake online giveaways like a professional.
It’s easy to understand the allure of giveaways on social media. We all want a free phone or an all expenses paid vacation! But here's the catch: not all giveaways are real. Scammers want your personal data, money, or even gain access to your accounts.
Spotting the fake from the real deal could save you from losing your money or being impersonated.

What is a fake giveaway?
A fake giveaway is a scam disguised as a contest or prize promotion. The goal is to trick you into giving away your personal data, money, or both.

Here’s what can go wrong if you take the bait:
• Identity theft: Your personal data could be stolen and used to commit fraud.
• Financial loss: Scammers ask for a fee to release goods
• Infected devices: Links could lead to malware being installed on your electronic device
• Phishing attacks: Your logins are stolen and you are locked out of your accounts

10 ways to spot fake social media giveaways
Here are ways to spot the fake giveaways

1. It’s a real brand, but the account isn’t verified
Scammers love to impersonate big brands. The real deal is usually verified with a blue tick. Do not go ahead if this is missing, or the URL points somewhere else

2. The account is brand new
Real brands would have a history of posts, prizes and information. If the account has too few posts, watch out.

3. Spelling and grammar mistakes
This is a dead give-away. Large corporations have teams that check that all online content is mistake free.

4. Excessive tasks to enter
It usually asks to share, like, or do a myriad of tasks before you can receive your prize.

5. It doesn’t have terms and conditions
If there are no terms and conditions, steer clear!

6. The prize is too good to be true
A trip to Mauritius for you and a few friends if you share a post is a dead giveaway that it is a scam!

7. The account gets bot-like engagement
Comments such as “Wow” or “I received mine today” or “the best purchase” from generic profiles will show fake interactions. Stay away!

8. You “won” but didn’t enter
“Congratulations! You’ve won!” but you never entered? It is a classic scam tactic. Be wary of links or requests to “claim” your prize.

9. They request payment information to claim the prize
There is no “processing fee” payable when you claim a prize. If they ask for credit card details, stay away!!

10. It’s April 1st
Scammer often use this date to scam unsuspecting victims. Stay away!

Protect yourself when using social media
Trust your gut! If a giveaway feels to good to be true. Scammers use big brands like Tupperware, SMEG, Takealot, Makro and others to make their scams look legit. Stay safe!

PHASA and the PHASA Foundation had the privilege of meeting with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the SCI Convention in Nashville on 21 January 2025. Critical conservation issues concerning giraffes, black rhinos, Cape mountain zebras, and brown hyenas were discussed, emphasising the importance of sustainable practices and collaborative efforts.

During the International Guides & Outfitters Meeting, updates were provided on the conservation status of species such as giraffes and bontebok. The significance of the ongoing partnership between PHASA and U.S. authorities to promote sustainable hunting practices was underscored. PHASA also expressed gratitude to SCI for their support in addressing regulatory issues affecting container shipments.
We extend our best wishes to Martha Williams, the former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as she embarks on her new journey.

North Korea will open to tourism from December this year.
Chinese tour operators, KTG Tours and Koryo Tours, who specialise in tours to North Korea, confirmed that the country would open the city of Samjiyon to tourists in December 2024.
“So far, just Samjiyon has been officially confirmed, but we think that Pyongyang and other places will open too,” KTG Tours said on a social media post.
Koryo Tours shared this optimism, saying it hoped the rest of the country would be open to tourism by December as well.
The opening of the borders comes after four years, when the country was closed to tourists in January 2020 to limit the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to bbc.com, North Korea has only allowed Russian visitors to enter the country since the closure, as the two nations forge closer ties.
According to Koryo Tours, North Korea has been working for years on the tourism development of Samjiyon, which is the most significant and sacred place in the whole Korean Peninsula, and is said to be the birthplace of Kim Jong II, the father of the present ruler Kim Jong Un
