Work is important, of course. Work, whether for money or not, provides us with what we need to survive. However, in this day and age, our work tends to go beyond just survival. We want to live in nice houses and drive nice cars and own nice things. But at what price?

Even if you’re working so much you forget to enjoy life just to survive, you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Being overworked not only has a serious impact only your relationships but it also adversely affects your mental and physical health. Burnout, negative stress, and depression are just a few of these impacts.

Life is too short to work constantly. Sure, there are times it will be necessary but make sure those times are limited.

I was guilty of working so hard I forgot to live. I went through burnout early in my business, but it didn’t stop me from working all the time, or stressing when work was slow. But a cancer diagnosis in early 2019 put everything into perspective. Thankfully, treatment worked and I have been in remission since late 2019, before it was too late for me to realise that life can be enjoyed.

When my husband’s industry closed in 2020 because of covid, and remained closed for more than 18 months, instead of working myself to death we made changes. We sold our house, packed up, and moved to the coast. Not only did we cut costs drastically but we live in a place far more beautiful and relaxed than Johannesburg. We’ve never been happier.

Take some time to rethink your options. Change is scary but sometimes it’s necessary. And sometimes life can force you into a far better situation.

The old adage “think before you speak” comes to mind here. But, as with all communication, it’s not so much what you say as how you say it. Body language and facial expressions play a big role.

However, words have become super important in the digital age. Unfortunately, many of us write before we think and wonder what went wrong.

The “easy” way of communication is actually far more complex than we give it credit for.

In the comfort zone, we tend to be happy to just sit back and remain stagnant.

When I started Nikann Solutions, I didn’t just step out of my comfort zone, I took a giant leap. It took hard work in unknow territory, with many lessons learnt. 11 years later, having grown a successful business, being able to work from a home office, and being able to literally move anywhere in the country (or world), I am still awe-struck and grateful for where I am now. Despite the rollercoaster ride of owning a business, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Although Windows 1.0 switched the PC to graphics mode, the overall look and feel was similar to DOS. It included a clipboard, calendar, clock, control panel, Notepad editor, Windows Write, and Windows Paint but it wasn’t very popular. It took five more years before Windows caught on (Windows 3.0).

Having been through burnout myself many years ago, I understand the importance of preventing it. Hindsight, right?

One of the things I stress to newbies in my industry (and it’s important for everyone, no matter how many years you’ve been in business) is don’t push yourself to the point of burnout. It’s not worth it.

I remember sitting at our Commodore 64, as a child, with a programming book, typing in symbols for hours, and producing a fully-functional game at the end. Of course, it was very frustrating when you got one symbol out of three pages of symbols wrong. But it taught me accuracy and patience, and the sense of accomplishment at the end was well worth it.

I remember the big floppy disks and the green monitor. But I remember the games being a lot of fun.

64kb of memory? I can barely create a simple Word document that size these days.
