Isn't the green simply stunning? This beautiful fellow is a Diederik Cuckoo (male). These birds are brood parasites, meaning that they lay their eggs in the nests of other species, and, rely on those birds to raise their young. They brood parasite a wide range of species, but mainly Bishops, Weavers and Sparrows.

A Black Girdled Lizard enjoys a bask in the sunshine 🌞. This one has possibly had a close call with a predator. You can see this by the short little tail. Many lizard species have the ability to shed their tails in case of emergency. Tail regrowth in the Girdled Lizards is quite a slow process.

This amazing beast is a Roan Antelope. Roan are extremely rare and a privilege to see. There are only around 1500 of these beautiful animals left in South Africa, with very few in our national parks. After the Common Eland, Roan are the second largest antelope species in southern Africa.

This beautiful little bird is a Pearl-Spotted Owlet. They are one of the smaller Owl species in our region. These little guys have what looks like false eyes on the back of their heads. Black round patches outlined with white.

These cute little birds, are a pair of African Scops Owls, that I encountered in a tree at Satara restcamp in South Africa's Kruger National Park. The Scops Owl is Southern Africa's smallest owl. It weighs in at 65g (around 2oz) and stands 16cm (around 6ins) tall.
These little birds are masters of camouflage, hiding in the forks of tree branches by day, and hunting insects by night. They occupy a special place in my heart due to incredible experiences that I have had with them over the years. One of these encounters was at Tzendzi Rustic Camp. I was looking for spiders with a head lamp one evening, when a Scops Owl took a moth in the beam of light right in front of my face. It came so close that I felt its wing brush my cheek. It is experiences like this that make Kruger National Park such a special place.

Isn't this fellow beautiful? This bird is a Black-Collared Barbet. These birds are regularly seen and heard in most of South Africa's National Parks and Game Reserves. This one came to check what titbits we had left on our braai (barbeque) grid.

This display of colour is a Lilac Breasted Roller. These bird are one of my favorite sightings in South Africa's " Bushveld". They owe their colouration more to the way the light falls on them than to pigmentation. Lilac Breasted Rollers eat insects and are usually seen perched on the upper parts of trees and bushes, looking for unsuspecting prey.

The Bloukrans River Bridge near Plettenberg Bay has a few outstanding features. It is the highest single span concrete arch bridge in the world, it is the highest road bridge in the Southern Hemisphere, and, it has the highest bridge bungy jump in the world (216m).

This statue of Nelson Mandela is erected on the balcony of Cape Town's City Hall. This is where he addressed the nation for the first time after his release from prison back in 1990. His release paved the way for our first democratic election, on this day in 1994.

This is the Wide Lipped Rhino. You can see here how it got its name. The mouth consists of a softer upper lip, used to manoeuvre grass into the mouth, and a harder lower lip, that presses grass against the upper lip in order to sever the grass. Wide Lipped Rhinos are also known as White Rhinos.
