REVIVING THE TSITSIKAMMA WETLANDS // A century-old decision to drain the Tsitsikamma wetlands has resulted in grave damage. But an MTO project is bringing nature back to this eco gem.

The Tsitsikamma region was once home to impressive wetlands. Those days are returning thanks to an ambitious project restoring the natural order to this area, conserving water and helping local communities.

Tsitsikamma is a colloquialism for ‘clear water’ and the region stands up to that claim. But roll back the clock for just over a century and it was even more impressive with wetlands spanning alongside the local mountains. Wetlands are not a common sight in South Africa, taking up less than 3% of its surface area. Yet they are crucially important in maintaining the natural ecosystem and without them, serious problems, including loss of water, start to occur. To date, excluding training, logistics and certain infrastructure, MTO Group has spent over R11.5 million on the restoration. Continue reading...

Have you heard of the Tsitsikamma "St******se" Hike
This unique rock pool hike starts at the Tsitsikamma Lodge & Spa (there is no cost, but you do need to sign in at reception). It’s a 5km trail, visiting 11 pools along the way, and should take around four hours to complete. Each pool has a name, and the name denotes your instructions – it is called the “St******se” Trail, after all! Crystal-clear mountain pools await, with names like “Bikini Pool”, “Bottomless Pool”, “Honeymoon Pool” and, yes you guessed it, “Kaalgat Pool.” This cheeky circular walk is a lesser-known Tsitsikamma hike but it’s still advisable to ring the bell before approaching the final pool to warn anyone already in there!

Did you know? In 2017, both the Langkloof and Tsitsikamma were part of a region declared by UNESCO as the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve.
Biosphere reserves are tools to address environmental, social and economic sustainability. They do not exclude people, development, towns or farmlands. Rather, they logically define an area that is deemed to be “special” (due to its ecological and cultural areas of significance) into three zones: the core zones, such as national parks, that have legal protection; the buffer zones that adjoin or surround the core areas and where low impact activities take place, such as ecotourism, education, research, etc, and; transition zones where towns are situated and where human activities such as farming, business, etc takes place.

Unesco Biosphere Reserve - In June 2017, the Garden Route, including both the Tsitsikamma and Langkloof regions of Koukamma, was recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by The United ...
