KZN launches rural tourism route:

The South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) has launched the Emalangeni Experience to promote rural tourism along KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast.

“Emalangeni is a scenic rural area near Pennington in Umdoni, which is home to beautiful accommodation sites and exquisite views,” commented Deborah Ludick, Acting CEO of SCTIE.

“By establishing this route, we are connecting the popular tourist town of Pennington with this rural setting, opening up Emalangeni to a new market. The route gives visitors a more authentic experience of the region through cultural engagements, while supporting entrepreneurs and local job creation.”

Travellers on the route can pass by the historic Botha House in Pennington, which provides guided tours. Visitors can also hike at the Umdoni Park Nature Reserve, play a round of golf at the Umdoni Country Club, or enjoy a meal and nature walk at Forest Cottage.

The route offers various accommodation options, such as the Ohlwini Garden Lodge, Essential Lifestyle Country Lodge, and Phiri’s Bed ‘n Breakfast. Buzy Corner Shisanyama and the artisanal Basset Breweries offer local dining choices.

Other activities and attractions along the route include Pennington Beach, Selborne Golf Club and Nkomba Nature Reserve.

Northern Drakensberg gets new reserve:

The new reserve is made up of 19 properties owned by 11 private landowners who saw the value of protecting their land in perpetuity and contributing towards securing the country’s poorly protected grassland biome and strategic water source areas.

The Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve includes several established resorts that have been welcoming holidaymakers for decades, with many guests coming to explore the region’s natural wonders, mountain peaks and lush valleys.

The new reserve will be managed by the Northern Drakensberg Landowners’ Association under a ten-year protected area management plan – a legal requirement of the declaration. It details the development and operational goals required to ensure that the nature reserve is effectively managed in the way it was intended – to benefit people and nature.

Chair of the Northern Drakensberg Landowners’ Association, Shaun Vorster commented: “We first started this conversation with other landowners in 2018. Initially, we envisioned protecting 12 000ha all the way from the Free State border to the Tugela River. But the 6 500ha that we have secured are critical as they are made up of beautiful grasslands and, of course, there’s the water that flows from these properties into the Tugela River. Aside from all the endangered species, the grasslands and water are the cornerstones of this reserve. The news is still sinking in but we are already seeing the benefits of having embarked on this process.”

To enable a multi-landowner protected area requires careful negotiating and contracting, legal prowess and the correct administrative processes to be followed. All of this was enabled thanks to the hard work of Conservation Outcomes, with the financial backing of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) South Africa and endorsement from the provincial conservation authority, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Thembanani Nsibande, Grasslands Manager for WWF South Africa, said: “A nature reserve of this collective size contributes to South Africa’s protected area expansion network and, in this beautiful corner of our country with incredible biodiversity value, makes us even more inspired to see the level of shared conservation ambition and commitment.

“As WWF, we are committed to supporting protected area expansion initiatives within this region, working with our partners such as Conservation Outcomes and willing landowners. As a result, another initiative to secure communal land within this area is currently under way through a partnership between WWF and WildTrust and other partners. This body of work is funded by WWF Nedbank Green Trust and will enable further creation of protected area corridors between communally owned land with the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve and uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.”

Grasslands are poorly protected in South Africa with reportedly less than 3% of the grassland biome currently under formal conservation. Yet, these areas are not only important for biodiversity but also act as giant sponges to absorb the high levels of rainfall in the eastern part of the country.

The reserve falls within the Northern Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area which means it also contributes significantly to South Africa’s water security.

KZN Club Med breaks ground:
During Africa’s Travel Indaba, Olivier Perillat, MD of Club Med South Africa, revealed that the construction of the new Club Med on KwaZulu Natal’s North Coast had started.

The R2 billion Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari occupies 32 000 hectares and will be accompanied by a 30 000-hectare Big Five bush lodge, which will break ground in northern Zululand soon. The resort will have one-kilometre-long shoreline access, 342 rooms, 66 villas, a 500-seat conference centre and a nautical centre. Its leisure centre and village club will offer guests a range of water sports and recreational activities.

The bush resort, with its 80-room lodge, will be accessible via road or air charter.

According to Perillat, Club Med and Collins Residential Consortium, its local development partner, will focus on respecting local culture and heritage and promoting sustainability.

He confirmed that the resort would adhere to Green Building Certification Standards during construction and be Green Globe Certified for operations, reports iol.co.za.

As part of Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari’s sustainable management initiatives, it will contribute to local communities, both socially and economically, as well as others prioritising cultural heritage and the environment. Development partners are also collaborating with Agrisud, a non-profit organisation, to support the growth and development of local businesses within the resort’s supply chain.

Okavango Delta gets new luxury camp:

Machaba Safaris will open the new luxury tented Monachira Camp in the northeast region of the Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve in May 2025.

Located on the banks of the Monachira Channel, the new camp will consist of eight luxury double tents and two two-bedroom family tents.A combination of water- and land-based activities will be on offer, including boat and mokoro trips, fishing (on request), island nature walks and limited game drives, along with in-room spa treatments.

Facilities at the camp will include a swimming pool, a sunset bar, an outdoor dining area, a boma/firepit, a curio shop and a lounge area. The camp will also be equipped with free WiFi.

Children of all ages are welcome, however the island nature walks will have a minimum age requirement of 16 years.

Monachira Camp is only accessible by helicopter from either Kasane or Maun, the nearest international airports serving as gateways.

Founded in 2012, Machaba Safaris operates three camps in the Okavango Delta and Ngoma Safari Lodge in Chobe National Park, along with two camps in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.

We arranged a visit to Love Lions Alive Sanctuary - all Lions, Caracal, Tigers, Jaguars, Puma are rescues - so there is no petting or walking with lions etc. These animals have been rescued from Eastern Europen Countries plus Zoos from abroad and in South Africa. An extremely informtive visit and definitely a must when in the area - prior arrangements need to be made, no day visitors are allowed. Animals have been given some dignity back into their lives and are well cared for at the Sanctuary.

Mantis to open three Gulf resorts:

The Mantis Hotel group has announced plans to expand beyond Africa, with three new properties in the Middle East.

The African-based hotel group announced the trio of new signings at the Future Hospitality Summit. The properties are the Hawar Resort by Mantis in Bahrain, Mantis Al Baha in Saudi Arabia and Mantis Saij Mountain Lodge in the United Arab Emirates.

This is Mantis’s first venture outside Africa – it has properties in Botswana, Madagascar, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, St Helena, Tanzania and Victoria Falls.

Hawar Resort by Mantis will be built on Bahrain’s Hawar Island and is set to open in the third quarter of 2024. The resort will have 102 luxury accommodation options and will be surrounded by a thriving wildlife sanctuary, being a part of Mantis’s sustainable hospitality portfolio.

The Mantis Al Baha 100-unit resort will be open from the second quarter of 2025 and will be home to an adventure park for thrill-seeking visitors, as well as spa facilities.

The Mantis Saij Mountain Lodge will offer guests 70 luxury eco-lodges and a range of guided treks and enriching activities in its mountainous location in the UAE. An opening date has not yet been announced for this property.

JW Marriott launches hotel in Nairobi:

JW Marriott opened its second property in Kenya last month, the JW Marriott Hotel Nairobi in the Westlands commercial district. The other property is the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge.

Westlands, the entertainment capital of Nairobi, is only 3km from the city's Central Business District, and 20km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The 35-storey hotel features 315 guest rooms, five dining options, a Spa by JW, a fitness centre and eight event spaces.

The hotel has over 1 700 sqm of meeting and event spaces for corporate events and family gatherings or celebrations. This includes the Grand Ballroom, with capacity for 800 guests.

The dining options include the MIDI Café & Patisserie, which serves drinks, pastries and light breakfasts; Myna Restaurant which offers buffet-style breakfasts and brunches; and Hudson Tavern Bar & Grill, a high-end sports bar that serves tapas, mezze and burgers.

Later in the year, the hotel will open 51 serviced apartments and a sky bar and lounge.

The serviced apartments, offered in one-, two-, or three-bedroom options, will offer long-stay guests and family groups a luxury experience.

The dining options that will open later in the year include Mughal, a fine-dining venue on the 31st floor of the hotel, and Mr Pang Sky Bar & Lounge, which will serve Pan-Asian cuisine and mixology.

TUI expands portfolio in East Africa:
The TUI Group plans to further expand in East Africa with the launch of a new brand, ‘The Mora’, in Zanzibar. Its latest property will open in the next few months during the Northern hemisphere spring, according to The Mora’s website.

The group recently revealed that it had eight new African hotels in the pipeline, in Cape Verde, The Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and Kenya. The first TUI BLUE hotel in Kenya is among the newest additions to TUI’s sub-Saharan African portfolio.
TUI BLUE Watamu in Kenya is being developed by Sands of Darakasi Resorts Limited. The 117-room hotel will be developed in the coming years as part of the TUI expansion strategy.

Meanwhile, The Mora Zanzibar’s look and feel is distinguished from previous TUI brands, offering a unique experience of “laid-back, contemporary luxury”. The brand is founded on the principles of personalisation and flexibility, providing guests with unscripted service, culinary freedom, and curated experiences.

Previously Emerald Zanzibar, the 250-room Mora Zanzibar on Matemwe’s Muyuni Beach is open for booking. The resort has four pools and a spa, with treatments for adults, children and teens, which are free of charge and available from 09h00 to 21h00.
