Our trip follows a semester-long seminar on South African cultural and business practices, as framed through the lens of Ubuntu: the Xhosa word for human(e)-ness, together-ness, and community. We study the history of South Africa from several angles…
The students

read texts such as a brief South African history, Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Prof. Mangaliso’s seminal journal article on Ubuntu, and a business book called “Ubuntu: An Inspiring Story About an African Tradition of Teamwork and Collaboration.” By the time they step off the plane at OR Tambo, they will all know a few words in Zulu, Xhosa, and Afrikaans; they’ll have a decent understanding of the country, its people, its languages, and its history; and they’ll be eager to engage with South Africans in businesses, schools, markets, and restaurants.
