Sometimes we catch a great run like the start of this video only to be left without speed as the swell runs away from you. You're out of breath from the effort of catching that swell and now you're without speed which is a recipe for disaster as the next big swell catches your tail and spins your ski broadside, followed by a possible swim 😤🏊♂️. Not this time! I quickly got her to "turn her ski with the wind". A good tip is to feel the wind on both ears. You'll be surprised how just that little direction change can increase your speed. The result.... you gain control of the steering and you're set up to catch the next run. Just like she did! 🌊

This was one of the most memorable 'first Miller's Runs' we have had😎. Earlier on this day we had our orientation paddle where we check boat set up and get comfortable. As if scripted, the wind picked up to a perfect strength to create what we call 'fresh runs' 🌊. That's when the swells are clean, moving at a lower speed and stacking up behind each other. This is Matt Murphy from the Shamrock Paddling Company. What we worked on here was when to push over a run and when to wait. Matt could see where he wanted to go but from time to time wasted energy in going for a run that was not on. It's important to learn when its 'go' time and keep pushing over, and when its better to stay on the smaller run and conserve. That's how you build momentum and before long you're in an amazing rhythm with the ocean. 20 minutes later you wake up like "jeepers where was I!". That's what downwind paddling can do.

Brad Fothergill joined us last year and this was his very first Miller's Run. 💨🌊🙏He is in good shape but does most of his paddling on flat water so we worked a lot on rhythm, stroke rate and choosing the correct runs. It's crucial to use the 'little ones' as Dawid Mocke and I call them to build up your speed before going for the bigger ones. Also it's important to learn which one's to let go because "there's always one behind". By the end of the week he was in a skinny boat and pulling over the top. 💪🏼

This is Jan Ziegler who joined us for the second time. 💨🌊🇿🇦. This was his first paddle of the trip and set a great foundation for the rest of the week. By the end he was comfortable to go out in the FENN Swordfish after starting in the Bluefin. The interesting part in this video is the short bursts of speed that are needed at the right time followed by the short periods of rest. Crucial!

It illustrates clearly how to time your sprint back to the beach without catching a big wave at the backline. Watch how @Dawid Mocke and Jasper Mocke get as close to the impact zone as possible without catching the (big) back wave. They then sprint after it catching a smaller unbroken swell that pushes them safely over the sand bank. It's common to then catch a smaller wave close to the beach. The trick, and often most important part though is getting through the impact zone at the back where the surf can cause the most damage and cause a possible long swim.
