Why there are many Dutch signboards in South Africa is because Dutch was one of the official languages of South Africa during the colonial era. The Dutch East India Company established a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, and the Dutch colonized the area for over a century.

During this time, Dutch settlers brought their language and culture with them, and Dutch became one of the main languages spoken in the country.
