Why there are many Dutch signboards in South Africa is because Dutch was one of the official languages of South Africa during the colonial era. The Dutch East India Company established a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, and the Dutch colonized the area for over a century.

During this time, Dutch settlers brought their language and culture with them, and Dutch became one of the main languages spoken in the country. The Dutch language remained an official language of South Africa until 1925, when it was replaced by Afrikaans, a language that developed from Dutch and other languages spoken by the settlers.

Today, South Africa has 11 official languages, including English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Venda, Ndebele and several other African languages. Dutch is no longer widely spoken in the country, but some of the original names remain.
