The UK has taken all 11 African countries off England's red list, easing travel restrictions.

26/11/2021

The United Kingdom has temporarily halted flights from South Africa and surrounds, and said it would refuse entry to South Africans and others who had been in the southern African region in the previous 10 days, as a safety measure.

It simultaneously declared the B.1.1.529 coronavirus variant – due to be given a name by the World Health Organisation during the course of Friday – to be a Variant under Investigation.

"No cases have been identified in the UK," the governments said in a statement. "We are taking these precautionary measures to protect public health and the progress we’ve made so far through our successful vaccination programme."

Six countries are now on the UK's red list for travel, as of Friday:
South Africa
Botswana
Lesotho
Eswatini
Zimbabwe
Namibia
For those countries, both commercial and private planes carrying passengers have been banned from midday (on Friday) until the early hours of Sunday morning, while the UK scrambles to set up quarantine.

Once that ban lifts, though, South Africans will still not be welcome.

"From midday on Friday 26 November, non-UK and Irish residents who have been in these countries in the previous 10 days will be refused entry into England," said the UK government. "This does not apply to those who have stayed airside and only transited through any of these countries while changing flights."

Facebook rumours concerning a relaxation of the rule requiring PCR tests for all travellers inbound into South Africa have caused a great deal of confusion among agents.
A Notice was sent out yesterday to the trade advising them of the necessity for a PCR test certificate (no other type of test will suffice), for travellers returning to South Africa.
The notice says all travellers must undergo a PCR test within the 72 hours prior to their departure for South Africa. The notice stresses that no other test is acceptable.
The statement says: “Recent records show that some returning passengers to JNB are not aware of the mandatory PCR test to be taken within 72 hours prior to the flight. Some are reporting with the antigen tests only. This is not accepted and (those passengers) will be denied boarding on their return to South Africa.
The confusion being discussed on Facebook concerns the wording of the latest two amendments to Direction 6, contained in updates to a Government Gazette dated October 21.

Its Happened Peeps - US is a GO

The long wait has finally come to an end: We are happy to see you again, USA! Starting 8 November 2021, entry into the United States will be possible for anyone who is fully vaccinated.

Travelers

• from the European Schengen area* as well as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil, China, India, Iran and South Africa,

• who are fully vaccinated with WHO-certified vaccines, and

The champagne corks are popping as we the travel and tourism industry celebrates the news that South Africa, and several other East African and Southern African countries will be taken off the UK’s red list, effective Monday, October 11.

As announced by UK Secretary of Transport, Grant Shapps, earlier this evening (October 7), only seven countries remain on the red list, with Britons now able to travel to 47 more countries and not needing to quarantine on arrival back from their destination.

According to the official UK Government website, South Africa will be added to the list of countries and territories with approved proof of vaccination, effective 04h00 on October 11.

Ttravel advisory do state: “If you arrive in England before that date you must follow the rules for people who are not fully vaccinated. If you arrive after that, you can use a vaccine certificate to prove your vaccination status.”

Shapps has announced he’ll recognise the vaccination status of 37 new countries and territories. We believe South Africa will be among these countries, but we are seeking clarity on this. South African travellers must be able to make confident choices to travel to the UK, knowing exactly what the basic requirements are and without having to worry that their proof of vaccination might not be accepted.”

The Netherlands has issued updated travel restrictions. South African travellers, and those from other non-EU States may now enter, as long as they are fully vaccinated.

Travellers must present a valid certificate of full vaccination against COVID-19 with an approved vaccine to enter the country. They will then be exempt from the quarantine requirement.

The final dose of the approved vaccine must have been administered at least 14 days before departure, or 28 days if vaccinated with the single-dose Janssen (J&J) vaccine. All vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency or the World Health Organization are accepted.

Travellers from outside the EU may provide their vaccination certificate in paper format – the Netherlands Government website here says: “If you do not have an (EU) Digital Covid Certificate (DCC) and/or are a resident of a country outside the EU and the Schengen area, you can in most cases enter the Netherlands using paper proof of vaccination.”

Unvaccinated travellers may still enter the Netherlands – these travellers must be European citizens or, if not, must be travelling for “essential reasons” – ie students, key workers and those travelling on business that cannot be conducted remotely. Non-vaccinated travellers may not enter the Netherlands for tourism purposes.

More Testing for Mauritius:

Mauritius have informed - That the government has added more testing to the procedures for incoming fully vaccinated tourists.

Visitors must be transferred straight to their hotel. On arrival at the hotel, they are obliged to undergo an antigen test and may not leave the hotel premises until they have received a negative test result. Once they have received a negative result, they are then free to explore the island.

The testing will be repeated on day 5.

South Africa has finally received official confirmation from the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) that the 18-month travel ban imposed on South Africa has been lifted, with effect from September 10.

Direct flights between South Africa and Mauritius, on Air Mauritius, start October 1, and from that date, fully vaccinated travellers from South Africa (among other countries) will be allowed to stay at any hotel, resort or accommodation of their choice and move freely around the island. Comair says its flights Johannesburg to Mauritius will start from November 30.

Unvaccinated travellers will still have to undergo 14 days’ quarantine in a state-designated quarantine facility.

All travellers will need to present a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours prior to departure. Children under 18 years of age do not need to be vaccinated if they are travelling with a fully vaccinated adult. However, they will also need to present a negative PCR test taken 72 hours before departure to Mauritius.

Said Arvind Bundhun, Director of the MTPA: “Mauritius is ready, and we can’t wait to welcome South Africans back to our beautiful country.”

Lufthansa reopens flights to South African passengers
South Africans may once again travel to Germany, as a result of Germany’s travel ban being lifted at midnight on 31 July.

The reclassification means that Lufthansa will be able to welcome passengers from South Africa on its flights once again. Lufthansa general manager for Southern Africa and East Africa Dr Andre Schulz welcomed the change and said that Lufthansa would increase frequencies to South Africa if there is demand for more flights.

Travellers from high-risk areas who have been fully vaccinated with approved vaccines are not required to undergo a quarantine on arrival. However, those who have not been fully vaccinated are required to complete a 10-day quarantine when arriving in Germany, but may end this after five days, if they test negative.
