Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement Preserve. Promote. Celebrate Lingua Franca was re-birthed as Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement by Lwanda Sindaphi and Mbongeni Nomkonwana in November 2012.

The goal was to help local artists mold their artistic gifts. The initiative started as a platform for young artists to challenge the dominant narratives that only perpetuate injustices and speak truth to the experiences of young people in the townships. Lingua Franca quickly grew and soon acquired a distinctive artistic vision. Today, Lingua Franca fuses performance poetry (i.e. spoken-word) with

music to create a signature sound that celebrates and preserves indigenous musicality and oral tradition while remaining both relevant and innovative in the production of multidisciplinary and dynamic Afro-futuristic art.

It is with great sadness and regret to formally announce a day before the Naked Word Festival is meant to commence (22-26 May 2019), that the festival is postponed until further notice. Countless times we have been informed of how important and necessary the festival is, and that led to the delay of this announcement in hopes that we could overcome the administrative and financial challenges we are faced with. The festival will however take place later in the year in a form of a mini festival and build up towards our 5th anniversary in 2020. We acknowledge the inconvenience this will cause to many and we deeply apologise to the poetry and arts community at large.

This poetry performance piece combines both the idea of Ethnography and Disinterment. There is a hegemony of young men who are fathers in the economically marginalised spaces and some of them have never met their fathers. They father their children from wounds. We see ourselves as victims of this social norm. We have children and their existence unearths the dormant wound of growing up without our fathers. We have come to realise that our love for them is deeply rooted in the wound of being fatherless for years. Through this performance we would like to explore how fatherlessness affects young Black males from the townships in postcolonial South Africa. using poetry, images and sounds.
