Preserve. Promote. Celebrate Lingua Franca was re-birthed as Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement by Lwanda Sindaphi and Mbongeni Nomkonwana in November 2012.
The goal was to help local artists mold their artistic gifts. The initiative started as a platform for young artists to challenge the dominant narratives that only perpetuate injustices and speak truth to the experiences of young people in the townships. Lingua Franca quickly grew and soon acquired a distinctive artistic vision. Today, Lingua Franca fuses performance poetry (i.e. spoken-word) with
music to create a signature sound that celebrates and preserves indigenous musicality and oral tradition while remaining both relevant and innovative in the production of multidisciplinary and dynamic Afro-futuristic art.
