The following elements were taken into consideration when the MA System was developed:
• provide a structured source of information and knowledge to ensure that capacity building is an ongoing process;
• create a mechanism to enhance the optimal and sustainable use of facilities (financially and technically) and achieve the primary aim, that is the sustainable use of our water resources;
• provide a planning mechanism in order to maintain and expand facilities for the delivery of appropriate services; and
• undertake planning for water demand management and water conservation measures.

The Municipal Assistant™ software system helps to prevent incidents of water and sanitation failures by facilitating the efficient management functions related to water treatment and supply.
The Municipal Assistant™ was developed as an operational information system to assist with the assessment (on component level including cost and lifespan), operations, maintenance (preventive and reactive) and management of water and wastewater facilities and related infrastructure.
Utilizing the system ensures that assets and people perform at optimal levels, which reduce service disruptions due to asset failure or human error, thereby reducing future maintenance costs.

The Municipal Assistant™ helps improve municipal water management efficiencies through the following core functionalities: Water quality monitoring and management; Evaluating and reporting compliance with regulatory water quality standards and criteria (e.g. Blue Drop and Green Drop specifications); Assists the user in the compilation of various reports; Asset management to ensure optimal performance of facilities to produce good quality drinking water and discharge; Operational and maintenance scheduling of equipment and staff utilisation; Assists with routine and process control inspections and incident reporting; and Compilation of operational and maintenance budgets to ensure timeous preventative maintenance and replacement of equipment.

A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute.

A report by the Guardian found that 1 million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, and this number is set to increase by another 20% by 2021 if we don’t act.

The same report said more than 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were purchased in 2016 across the world — up from 300 billion a decade ago.

Additionally, less than half of the bottles purchased in 2016 were recycled — with just 7% of those collected turned into new bottles, and the rest ending up in landfill sites or the ocean.
