A huge thank you to Helen and the amazing crew from the NSRI for a fantastic morning with over 50 eager learners! The boys had the chance to learn CPR, explore the rescue boats, and gain crucial knowledge about rip tides and how to reach people in challenging sea conditions. Afterwards, we took an exciting walk to our 'hidden gem' to see the historical gun emplacements and were lucky enough to witness whales breaching and playing in the ocean!
Did you know the NSRI is a voluntary organization? They raise funds through competitions and donations to keep doing their incredible work. Let's support them!

We don’t typically focus on politics in our posts or walks, but we have made an exception today to highlight the history of this famous figure who grew up right here in the Grey Street area (and always point out this apartment on our Grey Street walks).
Pravin Gordhan, a well-known South African politician, spent his early years in this apartment block. Born on 12 April 1949 in Durban, Gordhan went on to make an indelible mark on our country’s history.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Durban-Westville, Gordhan continued his education, completing postgraduate studies in Human Resource Development and later obtaining a postgraduate diploma in Economics from the prestigious London School of Economics.
We share our heartfelt condolences to Gordhan’s family. The loss of losing someone is never easy. Gordhan has left his mark in the history of South Africa and his legacy will always be remembered. As tributes pour in, stay strong as the country supports you in this difficult time. 🙏

What a beautiful morning for a hike to the old Whaling Station on the Bluff! ☀️ Perfect cool weather to soak in the views and fresh air.
Today, we uncovered Durban’s hidden whaling history, beyond the derelict buildings, there are still so many fascinating artifacts, like the giant iron pots used to render whale blubber (not meat!) for valuable oil. These cauldrons are a glimpse into Durban's industrial past and its whaling era. And don’t forget to check out the iconic Union emblem that still proudly stands at the bottom of the old stairs in the Administration building!
Our next whaling station walk is 27 October to book online www.durbanwalkingtours.co.za and click on tour calendar alternatively email [email protected]

Yesterday's school tour was a success with Grade 12 learners, and it was wonderful to see the Ladies Bead Market bustling with locals shopping. Beads hold a special place in Zulu culture, especially as Heritage Day approaches!
The Zulu nation has a rich tradition of using beads in clothing, accessories, and adornments, symbolizing messages, status, and identity. From necklaces to headbands, each beaded item showcases Zulu craftsmanship and cultural pride.

Don’t miss out! Our next Warwick Market tour, where we visit the vibrant Ladies Bead Market, is on 25th October. Book your spot online today www.durbanwalkingtours.co.za and click on tour calendar
Looking forward to seeing even more beaded beauty as we celebrate our heritage! 🌍

On our Florida Road walk, we always share fascinating stories about the history of Mitchell Park and its famous residents, including Admiral the Tortoise, a beloved icon and possibly Durban's oldest resident!
This Heritage Day, 24th September, the Zoo is celebrating a huge milestone—Admiral turns 120! His story is as captivating as it is heartwarming. During the outbreak of WW1, Admiral was brought to the zoo in a cigar box by a soldier who asked for him to be cared for while he fought in the war. Sadly, the soldier never returned, but Admiral has since lived a peaceful, long life in the zoo.
Join Mitchell Park Zoo as we honour his incredible journey! The day's events include fun activities for children, educational exhibits, the launch of the zoo's little library, themed souvenirs, and exciting prizes to be won.
Standard zoo entry fees apply: R15 for adults and R14 for children which will go towards the upkeep and ongoing maintenance.

If you strolling along Durban’s Promenade? Here’s a bit of fascinating history!!
Durban's Rachel Finlayson Pool
Originally known as the Beach Baths, this iconic facility opened in the early 1900s and was later renamed in honour of Rachel Finlayson, founder of the Cygnus Ladies Swimming Club in 1909 and coach of South Africa's 1928 Olympic swimming team. For 27 years, "Ma Finn" (as she was known) served as the official chaperone to SA's women swimmers, leaving a lasting legacy.
At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Durbanite Kathleen Russell won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay and reached the semi-finals in the 100m freestyle.
In 1963, a concrete slide into the pool's deep end was demolished following two accidents. That same year, "Ma Finn" passed away at Addington Hospital at the age of 76.
A true pioneer in Durban's swimming history, her spirit lives on at this beloved beachfront spot!

ThThe Durban Whaling Station has a fascinating history, reflecting the maritime culture and industrial growth of our city during the 20th century. The whaling industry in Durban reached its peak in the 1950s and was one of the biggest Land based whaling stations in the world. The station operated 24 hours a day, processing thousands of whales annually, making Durban one of the busiest whaling ports in the world.
A fun fact 🐋🍦 If you grew up in Durban in the 1950s, there's a good chance that the ice cream you enjoyed might have contained whale oil! 🐳 Back then, whale byproducts were used in various food products, including ice cream, margarine, and more. It's a fascinating (and surprising!) part of our city's history.
We have a few spaces left for 15 September and a new date has been set for 27th October. To book your space www.durbanwalkingtours.co.za and click on tour calendar or email [email protected]

Three weeks ago, Lynne had a bit of an ‘office mishap’—let’s just say she had a slip-up that a stunt double would envy, courtesy of some sneaky puppy p*e! The tumble was serious enough to break her femur, and she’s been on quite the adventure with surgery and a hospital stay (she even got some extra blood, but not in the way she wanted!). But she is a fighter and is bouncing back! We’re hopeful she’ll be back on her feet by the end of September.
In the meantime, Ruth has been keeping things running smoothly with the big corporate and school tours along with our Point and Whaling Station Tours. We’re aiming to have our full range of tours back in action by the end of September, so stay tuned!"
Mafika has been living his best life at Superdogs for the past three weeks, and wow, what a difference! Our little pup has come back a whole new dog—training definitely paid off!

Had a cultural tour at the Warwick Markets yesterday with a school group from Reddam High! The vibrant atmosphere, diverse traditions, and local flavours made it an unforgettable experience.
From exploring the spice shop at Victoria Street Market and bravely trying the hottest spice (peri peri) and pretending it wasn’t that hot (lol) to playing a game of pool on the pavement outside Warwick Markets, and even trying a true African delicacy at the Bovine Market (cow cheek meat served on a wooden board with fresh steamed bread)

Whaling Station Walk 25th August and 15th September
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that we have officially received the green light again to organize a walk to the whaling station using our” hidden gem” to get there!

The Old Whaling Station located in The Bluff, was one of the largest land-based whaling stations in the world. It was established in 1907 and continued operations until 1975 when it eventually closed.

At its peak in 1965 it processed over 3640 whales killed by its fleet. In the early 1900’s it became common knowledge that more whales passed closer to Durban’s shores than any other coastal city in the world

We will visit the following:

Head Office
Offices
Laboratory
Workshop buildings
Meat Meal Store
Staff Accommodation
Boiler House and Plants
Kitchen & Dinning room
Cannery

The Bluff became the WORLD’S first certified Whale Heritage Site in October 2019.
Note: a portion of the fee has been designated as a donation and plays a vital role in supporting the valuable initiatives of Sodurba Tourism Association

Cost R320,00 per person

Note this is not suitable for children under the age of 10
This walk is approx 10kms and a basic level of fitness is needed

It was a cultural tour of the Warwick Markets with Grade 9 learners from St Marys School in Kloof.
We loved seeing these adventurous young ladies embrace the markets and support many informal traders by buying the local food, vetkoek with slap chips, and even trying the meat at the Bovine Market. Supporting the ladies at the Bead Market by purchasing various types of beadwork, and even buying the very colourful African pinafore dresses. The last highlight was exploring the spices at the spice shop, and even buying saffron!

It was a beautiful, warm, and sunny winter's day in Durban—perfect weather for a matric tour on facadism, gentrification and urban renewal with Curro Heritage House Matric Students.
The students were intrigued by the old and new, and how it reflects the city's effort to maintain its historical charm while accommodating modern needs.
As we continued our walk, we encountered several examples of gentrification – the process of renovating and improving a district.
One of the highlights of the tour was the presence of "Teddy," the Curro Heritage House mascot. Teddy, a cheerful teddy bear seemed to be living his best life and is a beloved companion on all their outings.

Thank you St Henry’s Marist College for hosting Chilean students who joined us in exploring the rich history of Grey Street. This area is a testament to the resilience and contributions of Durban’s Indian community and their integral role in the city's development and cultural landscape. Its vibrant past reflects the multicultural heritage of Durban. We then visited the Victoria Street Market, a bustling hub where we experienced the blend of cultures through food, crafts, and goods, followed by an interesting and informative talk at the mosque.
