Since 1996 Charlote Swartbooi take s international tourists through the history and culture of Masiphumelele. She received formal tour guide training through 'Alive Patel', a tour guide training organisation in 2000. She then became affilated to a new tourism development in Masiphumelele in 2000 and now running independently since 2003. This township is an informal settlement in the southern subur

bs of Cape Town, first developed in 1992 by people coming from the Eastern Cape looking for work opportunities in the Cape Town vicinties. The township has grown enormously since then and now houses more than 50,000 people. There are many development projects going on in Masiphumelele funded by organisations from South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands and others. Therefore many approaches to fight the desperate situations of settlments like Masiphumelele can be visted and maybe even supported.
