Magoebaskloof Birders' Cottage Small farm with three self catering cottages hidden in the cool Magoebaskloof valley. All cottages have WIFI. The cottages are accessed by a 2 km dirt road.

Magoebaskloof Birders’ Cottages are located on Dragonwyck Farm in the Magoebaskloof on the edge of the Limpopo Drakensberg escarpment. Accommodation comprises three self-catering cottages surrounded by indigenous plants providing the ideal habitat for many birds and animals. The road is not suitable for very low profile cars or drivers who are unaccustomed to dirt roads. TROGON COTTAGE features on

e bedroom furnished with a double bed. The bathroom has a large double bath with a view of the forest. There is a separate shower. Another large double bath is hidden outside in the garden. Electric geyser supplies hot water. NARINA COTTAGE features one bedroom with a queen size bed that can be changed into two single beds if required. It has an outside bath and a shower inside. ROBIN COTTAGE is a two bedroom unit. The main bedroom has a bath, shower and toilet tucked into a very private garden outside. There is a shower and toilet inside as well. The second bedroom has a double bed on the mezzanine level and two single beds on the lower floor. Hot water is supplied by an electric geyser. Linen and towels are provided in all three cottages and each unit has a fully equiped kitchen with a gas hob and electric oven, fridge-freezer, microwave, and braai facilities. The cottages are no-smoking zones and smokers are kindly requested to smoke outside. Unfortunately no pets are allowed. Dragonwyck Farm is a working farm producing avocados and indigenous plants. Various walks can be enjoyed on the farm which follow the streams and provide access to escarpment forest. Woodbush Forest, one of the premier birding spots in South Africa, is also a short drive away and there are a number of scenic drives in the district for excellent bird watching opportunities. Fishing and adventure activities are available in the Haenertsburg area.

I heard a thump on a window this morning and immediately realized a bird had struck a window. I found a Green Twinspot on its back hyperventilating. We put it in a ventilated shoebox in a cloth and closed the box. An hour later I checked on the bird, it was alive but not active. We put it in a nearby shrub and hoped for the best. An hour later I went to check on it and it flew away, strongly.
Bird strikes on our windows are a depressingly regular occurrence.
To avoid strikes we have attached bird netting to the most vulnerable windows. So far, windows with the netting no longer have bird strikes.

Spent a bit of time in the hide today. Red-backed Mannikin were there in their numbers. Five Lemon Doves were enjoying the seed. The green on the Lemon Dove is not often seen in the darkness of the forest floor.

Invasive Ginger growing in Magoebaskloof. Hedychium sp is a Category 1b invader plant. Highly invasive. Land owner must remove and destroy the plant.
Overtime it completely covers an area. Local plants are outcompeted and bushbuck lose their grazing.

A recent guest, Johan Roos, sent me photographs he took while staying at Magoebaskloof Birders' Cottages. The photographs were taken at Birders Cottages, Debegeni Falls and Woodbush. They were here during the recent cold spell. No snow for us, but very cold and wet.

Our Story
